Adding Page Numbers

Post by Redskins »

I want to add page numbers to the bottom of each page in a PDF output but when i add them via "insert>footnote" it puts the number at the top of the page and draws a line at the bottom of the page...

Can someone help me out and tell me the easiest way to get my pages numbered?

If you're trying to insert page numbers from inside a topic, then you're looking in the wrong place. A footnote is something like this. [1]

You can insert page numbers by editing the PAGE LAYOUT that you are using for the PDF. (Look in Content Explorer\Resources to find your page layouts folder.) If you're using any of the page layouts provided, there is likely to be a "footer" box. THAT'S where you insert the page number.

Click on the footer frame and press F2. To insert the page number, from the Insert menu select Variable...
In the list on the left click System, then select PageNumber from the list on the right.

Et voila! You should now see page numbers when you generate your PDF.

A couple of points to remember when doing this:
If you are using left, right and first pages in your page layouts, you have to put the page number in each page.
If you have several different page layouts in your PDF (for example a single column page layout for some sections and a two-column layout for others) you need to edit all the page layouts.
Adjust the format of the page numbers (1, 2, 3 or a, b, c or i, ii, iii etc) in the Properties for each topic, in the Printed Output tab.
Don't worry if you see that the page numbers on every topic starts with 1 when you view individual topics. That is normal, because Flare doesn't know where an individual topic might fall in the book.

There, that should sort you out, but if you're still confused, download the Printed Output Guide from the website, you can find a link on the Start page I think.

1 This is the footnote associated with the [1] above. You might have got confused with "footer".

Just to clarify, she's talking about the Properties for each topic in the TOC Editor.
