I must publish the PDF output of a large project as three separate volumes. It is not really important whether I obtain three separate PDF files (which I don't know how to get from Flare from within a single target) or a single PDF file that I then split manually in Acrobat Pro.
I got some of the simpler requirements right (e.g. page and chapter numbers starting at 1 in each volume). Other requirements are still far from solved. It seems I cannot use three separate PDF targets, one for each volume, because this breaks the cross-references to topics and figures across volume boundaries (anything that is not included in the output is not cross-referenced to in the output).
A few of the things I don't know how to get:
- separate index for each volume (each index containing only the indexed words of the respective volume)
- a global index, reporting for each entry the volume number in addition to the page number
- separate TOC for each volume (listing only the chapters and sections of the respective volume)
- cross-references across volumes must start with "Volume X", while cross-references within the same volume must not (my only solution is to manually choose different cross-reference styles, but I would like to use a single "smart" style that knows if the referenced item is in the same volume or a different one).
Any help appreciated.

To make one target separate into different pdf documents, you have to set each volume in the TOC as a new chapter, and then select "Generate multiple documents for native XPS/PDF output" from the Advanced tab in the Target editor.enricosavazzi wrote:I must publish the PDF output of a large project as three separate volumes. This may allow your cross-references to work too since everything is technically coming from 1 target and TOC.
You may have to include a TOC proxy and Index proxy for each "chapter/volume" in the TOC if you want it to be included in each PDF.
From the Flare Help -
PDF output - multiple documents (create) - If you are generating PDF output directly (rather than going through FrameMaker or Microsoft Word to produce it), you can split the generated output into multiple documents, rather than using the default, which results in only one document. To create multiple PDF documents, you must also specify chapter breaks at the appropriate places in the TOC (not the TOC that displays in the PDF output, but in the "outline TOC" used to determine the printed manual content and structure). This can be done on the Printed Output tab of the TOC Properties dialog. By specifying chapter breaks, you are letting Flare know where you want to split the output into new PDF documents. Then in the Advanced tab of the Target Editor, select the "Generate multiple documents for native XPS/PDF output" option See Specifying Chapter Breaks and Page Layouts.

Re: Multi-volume project problems
It's now a decade after this first post.
Is there any way to insert cross-references between “volumes” or within a “multi-book” set within a project, such that:
- Insert a cross-reference
- Flare conditionally displays book or volume name/identifier within the cross reference if the reference crosses the book/volume boundary
- Displays the correct page numbering for the target book/volume.
