Hi,
We will be soon setting Flare up in our business.
I'm just wondering if anyone here has setup Flare on a network, so rather than it being installed locally, its installed for that user on the network? Most of our applications run this way, almost nothing is installed locally due to IT policy, just wondering if anyone has had any problems with this in the past or things to keep in mind when doing something like this?
Thanks,
Nick.

Re: Accessing Flare over a network, rather than local install
Flare can work over a network, particularly if it is going through source control.
There are issues, partly due to the fact that Flare is a web based technology and Microsoft has taken steps to protect us from ourselves. Builds to a network location can be barred from the local machine and so on.
There can also be issues with network traffic, particularly when building output.
I'd try to keep the content local as musch as possible, and that means source control for a network project because source control synchronises local copies...
Others who have had more experience on sharing without source control will chime in (I hope...)

Are you talking about the Flare application itself, or the project data? The project data can be stored on a network, but I don't think the application itself can. I guess maybe if you were accessing another computer via Remote Desktop, maybe. Or using something like Citrix metaframe or whatever that thing is called. Remote Desktop I can see working, so long as your user access allowed writing to the registry, since Flare stores some info there. I don't know if the Citrix type access would work, because I don't think it allows for writing to the registry. I could be totally wrong, though.nickatwork wrote:I'm just wondering if anyone here has setup Flare on a network, so rather than it being installed locally, its installed for that user on the network? It depends on what you mean by "accessing over a network" -- if it's doing something like installing it on a terminal server / citrix, and then connecting only the application to your local desktop, that would probably work (though I've never tried it). If you mean installing Flare on a network file server, and running it that way, I don't know if it would work or not, but I suspect it wouldn't be a supported configuration by MadCap.

Flare and citrix can work. But the application needs to be installed on each machine in order for it to work. Flare can be installed on your primary machine and a laptop or home machine as long as they are not running at the same time
