Creating online form fields

Post by karin+schmidlin »

I am trying to create a manual with active form fields for the user/reader to add notes, check off lists, or fill out forms in the online version of the document. So far I haven't found a way to do that. Anybody tried that?

Where would these entries and selections go? Do you expect them to be saved and used for other tasks? One option would be using MadCap Feedback Server / Service, but that adds mainly the commenting feature to topics.

What you can try is enter custom HTML code into the topics consisting of a form with the controls you need. The form submission will go to a script that is maintained outside of Flare. The script collects the entries and saves them in a database.
Do you also want the entries to appear the next time the user access that topic? If yes, you need some sort of user account management and a bit more code to load the entries from the database.
I am sure it can be done, but it isn't something Flare actively supports. The best you can hope for is that Flare leaves your HTML forms untouched.

Thanks for the quick reply Ramon! At this point the user input doesn't have to be stored and analyzed, but having it show up when the user returns is definitely something we'd want. We'll try your suggestion with HTML and look into Madcap Feedback for the near future.

Cheers
