The book I'm working on has Volumes and Chapters.
I've structured it so each Volume has an h1 style.
The Volume pages are structured like this:
<h4>Book I</h4>
<h1>Title</h1>
On the page, these two are blocks are stacked and separated by borders, like so:
In the TOC, I want the h1 text to appear as "Book I: [h1 title]".
So, I created the following p.TOC1 style:
p.TOC1
{
font-size: 14pt;
font-weight: normal;
color: black;
margin: 24pt 0 0 0;
padding: 0;
mc-auto-number-format: 'B:Book {R}: ';
page-break-before: auto;
}
However, when the TOC compiles, the auto-number stuff doesn't appear -- just the h1 text.
Is there a way to add auto-numbers to generated TOC styles themselves, so the numbers appear in the TOC, and don't have to be pulled from the original h1 tag? Or is there some easier way to accomplish what I'm tying to do here?
There is probably a simple way to to this, but it is escaping me.
Any advice is appreciated.
Thanks,
-John
Can you put auto-numbers in generated TOC styles?

Re: Can you put auto-numbers in generated TOC styles?
I'm certainly no expert, but in general I've observed that in print TOCs (PDFs, for example), the TOC typically acquires any autonumber information from the heading level itself.
So, if one has an H1 that has no autonumbering, then no autonumbering appears in the corresponding TOC1 entry.
Conversely, if an H1 has autonumbering, then TOC1 includes that autonumbering information in the generated TOC.
The question I have is that if one wants autonumbering in a TOC, but not in the corresponding heading style, how does one get that? Moreoever, my experiments with autonumbering the TOC[n] CSS style have yet to be successful.
Having said that, perhaps this Forum thread will be useful to you:
