Printing from WebHelp with thumbnail images

Post by nickatwork »

Currently, I have a lot of thumbnails, it simply makes the pages a lot clearer, but when trying to print these, the thumbnail prints, I would prefer to set the full sized version of the image to show up instead? Is this possible?

Thanks,
Nick

Hi Nick
You can set up the size each image should appear when printed, leaving the thumbnail size just for the WebHelp page.
Right-click the picture and select "Edit Picture". Set the size in the "Print Size" tab.
I think that's all I did when I set this up ages ago. Post again if you have any questions.

I haven't found a way to print from within the WebHelp output with the full-size images. I think the Print Size tab on the Edit Picture dialog affects Print targets (like pdf or Word) but doesn't affect printing from WebHelp.

Hi Suze,
Setting the print for each screenshot seems like a huge amount of work. Any chance you've been able to fix the print size in the image styles?

thx,

For HTML5, I think the short answer is no. I recieved this reply from MadCap Support today 2/4/2013:

As your HTML5 Output is only going to be printed as viewed (with thumbnails), I have a couple suggestions for other options. You could create a downloadable PDF of the entire content and link it to your HTML5 Output, make the images in your content non-thumbnail, or create a custom button in Flare (which would need custom JavaScript) that will print a PDF output of the current topic.

To create a custom button in Flare, please follow the steps below:
1. Open your Skin file in the XML editor.
2. In the Toolbar tab, select the Add custom toolbar item button at the bottom of the pane.
3. Click the Add Item button (blue arrow) 4. Enter custom JavaScript in the Custom JavaScript window.

Also, you would probably need a developer to work out the JavaScript necessary for the button to work.

Currently dealing with exactly this issue. It's not necessary to adjust the print size for every image - you can change it for all by editing the IMG tag in Style.CSS and set a height for "Medium:print". Also, set mc-thumbnail to none for print. I set the height to 300 and obtained a reasonable size for all images - not the original size, but good enough for government work, as the saying goes.

Trouble is, that doesn't solve the problem. What we're printing is still the thumbnail version, only now it's 300px instead of 48. So, the new question is, Is there any way to tell the print process to use the full-sized image rather than the thumbnail image? The suggestion to use Javascript is rather like suggesting that we use magic. Not very useful without a few words of the incantation ;)

I have a solution. Bit of a hack, but here goes:

1) Use the information in my last reply to set a print height for images.
2) After building your project, run a search-and-replace on the .htm files, replacing all instances of...
_thumb_0_58.png"
... with...
.png" height="58"

As a side effect, you could probably shrink the project by a few bytes by deleting all the thumbnail images in the output's resources folder.

If anyone has a cleaner solution, I'll be thrilled to hear about it. :!: (Especially since one of the reasons I switched to Flare was because I was sick of all the post-processing I had to do with the previous HAT)
