Linking accross projects

Hi,

Can someone point me somewhere as to how I link from a topic in Project A to another topic in Project B, where both A and B get included as imported projects in the TOC of a Master project?

Thanks
Robin

You have a masterproject and the included projects, true. But as far as I remember you produce separate outputs - means: You gotta place a link to the topic you want to link to, you do that using the relative path from the starting topic ot the linked topic. But careful: you need the structure the user has lateron, not your structure in the projects structure.

What output format do you produce?

As the linked topic isn't present in project A, then it means you can't browse/select the topic when you set up the link. So you'd need to set it as a link to an External file, and then enter the relative path to the topic as it would be in the master project.

For example, if you had the following topics in your master project:
Content\A\Topic1.htm
Content\B\Topic2.htm

Then you'd need to use this relative path for a link from topic 1 to topic 2:
../B/Topic2.htm

Alternatively, it may be easier to have all the projects open at the same time, and create dummy links in the master project which you then copy/paste to the imported projects. For example, create the link in the topic in the master project (but don't save the topic), and then copy and paste the link/xref to the original topic in project A. It will be a broken link in project A, but should work ok when it is imported into the master project.

OK - output is CHM and Web-based. There is no problem in maintaining the same file structure on the deployed system, so relative paths will be fine. I was suspecting that was the approach, but maybe there was something easier - I'm not too sure if the Hyperlink dialog in Flare allows this sort of cross-project navigation (never used it besides for local project topics), but will give it a try. Thanks again.

The hyperlink and cross-reference dialogs don't support any sort of cross-project navigation; that's why I said you can't browse/select the topic and would need to enter the path by hand. You can set up links in the master project because copies of the imported files are contained in that project.
