Alphabet Glossary/Multiple Glossary

Post by alaltenburg »

Hello all,
I am needing a way to achieve the alphabet glossary, since this is not a current Flare feature. I have already submitted a feature enhancement.

With that stated, is there a way to create multiple glossaries (A, B, C, ect through the entire alphabet) and then insert each one as a proxy into one .htm file? I am thinking then I could make a hyperlink to the heading created before each proxy.

I am open to other suggestions as well, but am hoping I do not have to copy the entire list of glossary terms into an .htm to achieve this goal.

Thank,
Andrea

I don't think this will be possible; at least not without some fancy scripting.

You can create as many glossary files as you like, but you can't create a glossary proxy from one particular file; the proxy includes all of the glossary files selected in the target settings.

The glossary proxy in the output can be set to include headings for each letter, but it would be tricky to add links to them as you need to somehow insert a bookmark to link to. If you know someone fairly competent in javascript, it wouldn't be a massive job; you'd need to dynamically add a bookmark to each style div.GlossaryPageHeading.

Thank you Dave. My boss wants an Alphabet Glossary and I'm just not sure how else to accomplish this aside from not using the proxy and placing all the terms in an .htm file. That seems like a stupid way to achieve it, but I am not sure of another option at this point.

We don't really like the normal glossary either so we resorted to teh glossary proxy, but that still isn't quite like we would prefer it.
So we're thinking about generating a separate .chm file containing the glossary only. One topic = one term, TOC containing all terms with books for the letters fo the alphabet, all terms in alphabetical order.
The start page of that .chm file will contain a miniTOC proxy that contains all terms in alphabetical order (cos it uses the order of the topics in the TOC).

It's a bit of an effort but that's how we plan to do it.

I actually have each chapter of the documentation set up into separate Flare projects with their own glossary, but I then had to create a project for a "full" glossary as a combination of each of the chapters. I like using the glossary proxy as the best option right now, even though it is not exactly how I want to do it.

Does the way you plan to do it include a hyperlinked alphabet to link to each letter heading?

Thanks,
Andrea

No, in fact it doesn't. But that is on the enhancement request list for MadCap. The more people ask for it, the better.
Right now you would have to do that with some "fancy scripting" in the topic that contains the glossary proxy.

Since I do not know javascript, I have been trying to research how to insert a bookmark by every glossary heading. I have already put in a feature request for a alphabet glossary.

Thanks,
Andrea
