Printing a TOC

Post by tailur2 »

I have a Flare WebHelp project that I would like to print the TOC just to be able to show to a training committee a complete listing of all the topics that are currently in my project. I remember there was a way to do this in RoboHelp. Is there a way to do this in Flare?

I found a way to do this last week, but it isn't very easy to read. I think it was the best i could do, though.

1. change the TOC view to Grid View (or expand every book in the tree)
2. use a program like SnagIt to capture a scrolling region
3. print from SnagIt

you may be able to run a report for a list of only the topics used. i tried the TOC report and it had more information that i would have liked.

Thanks for the info. I ended up going to my WebHelp site, expanding all the books and then I was able to copy and paste into a word document. Not the ideal way I would like this put it worked.

Thanks for your response.

You can display a list of the TOC items using the Reports feature. There is an option that prints the TOC for the primary target - so if you have several targets and TOCs you'll have to re-assign the primary one to get the print-out.

The report shows the Title of the TOC item, and the Link to the file (or "none" if not yet completed). It's not the greatest formatting, but it provides enough info for a review.

How about compiling the project as a PDF then just printing out just the Contents pages of the PDF output.

To get the correct TOC headings level depth in your PDF
In the Flare Target Editor (for PDF), open the Advanced tab and under Generated TOC, experiment with the option 'Use TOC depth for heading levels'

Again, a slightly lumpy solution but another option.

It does seem a major weakness that you can't just right click a TOC and select "Print".

Personally, I take a screenshot of the compiled help, but that is because some of the projects I have inherited do not include the TOC in PDF or Word output, even when I select it in Properties (and I don't want to waste time investigating why not).

is there a TOC proxy in an otherwise blank topic? a TOC won't be included without one.
