How do I set the TOC pane to wrap?

Post by kafkascampi »

Hi

I have some long FAQ titles in my TOC, and they are causing horizontal scrolling in the TOC pane. I can't find a CSS way to specify a max width for that pane. Is there another way to do this?

thanks!

No, you set the width in the skin and that's the width it'll open at every time, although the user can drag it either way, but the next time it opens it'll be at the width you set. You'd have to modify the file in the output that controls the TOC pane to specify a max-width (possibly), but that's not necessarily supported by all browsers.

Alternatively, you can either change the text of your TOC entries so the titles aren't so long, or you can set the text to wrap in the pane. You might be able to set wrapping nowadays through the CSS, or you might have to modify one of the skin files after you build the output. Can't remember off the top of my head how word-wrapping in the TOC pane can be adjusted.

or you can set the text to wrap in the pane
That's what I really want to do, and can't figure out.

Try setting the white-space attribute in the p.TOC1, p.TOC2, etc., styles to "normal". See if that works. You should delete the output folder before building to make sure the browser loads the new styles.

The p.TOC styles are only for printed TOCs; they're not used in WebHelp output.

I'm not aware of any skin/stylesheet setting, I think you can only change the wrap property by manually editing TOC.htm in the output; the line is:

Code: Select all

<div id="CatapultToc" style="white-space: nowrap;">
I don't think you'll get good results though, the wrapped lines will not be aligned/indented to the TOC level.

Yeah, I didn't think it was that easy but it's been awhile since I've tried it and I couldn't find the solution in a quick search of the forum.

I'm resurrecting this dusty old post to see if anyone has a solution to this problem.
