Conditions inside or outside Snippets?

Post by crdmerge »

I'm looking for best practice for Flare snippets with conditions.

Specifically, to assign ScreenOnly to a navigation snippet:
  • Assign the condition to the code inside the snippet?
Assign the condition to the snippet (in the topic)?
Any problem if the condition is assigned both inside and outside the snippet? For example, if the snippet contains the condition and one of my writers also conditionalizes it in a topic.
Thx,
Leon

Although I only have a few that meet this criterion, I favor applying a condition inside the snippet only for the given condition. For example, I have a snippet that I used to provide some instructions for image maps. This is marked with a screen-only condition in the snippet. The figure is marked with the condition in the topic.

never tried it, but it's less effort if you assign the condition to the snippet file. If you exclude the condition in the target, that should be enough. You just have to make sure that the missing snippet file doesn't produce an empty space in the topics where the snippet is inserted.

The best practice for you is just that, the best practice for you. Whether you apply conditions "inside" or "outside" the snippet depends completely on how you plan to use the snippet. In the case of a snippet that contains content that you only ever expect to use for an online target, then setting the ScreenOnly condition on the entire snippet is reasonable.
