How does the flare index work? I am unable to remove a topic

I have a keyword with two topics associated.

I right click and select "remove" to remove one of the topics.... and nothing happens.

I am unable to figure out how to get this topic off of the keyword.

Suggestions?

Index keywords are inserted in the topics, so you have to go to that specific topic and delete the keyword from there.

In 6.1 at least, you can remove a topic from an index keyword using the Index pane. Expand the keyword to see the list of topics assigned to it, right-click the topic and select Unassign Topic.

It is the same in v7... in theory!

Problem is that the above flow has no effect... and I am unable to remove the topic from the keyword....

As I understand it, the index is built from tags in the topics themselves, right?

Are there any other places that hold links from keywords to topics?

I am trying to fix this by editing the xml directly.... so far without luck.

FWIW, I just tried using Unassign Topic from the Index pane in my project and it worked -- keyword gone from topic. But maybe there are some configurations where it wouldn't work? I'd be interested to know, if someone knows...

I wonder what happens if the keyword is twice in a topic. Any chance that a keyword is in a snippet used in the topic?

I just tried it in a snippet...the Index pane lists the snippet separate from the topic. You can unassign from the snippet and/or the topic.

Conversely, it is slightly annoying that deleting an index tag from the topic does not remove it from the index itself. Leaves an 'empty' index reference, though this doesn't seem to appear in the output.

The only "Remove" word is if you right-click a keyword, and there you will see "Remove Keyword" and that typically prompts you by telling you which files will be affected.

To remove a topic from a keyword, right-click the topic, and select Unassign Topic (as whunter said).

Could you describe the structure of your index in this area a little more? It's possible there's some recursion issue depending on the level of the index, etc.

Yes!

The way the index works in Flare takes a lot of brain work (and I don't like using my brain!). I find it a hassle, because in Robohelp the Index is much more "wysiwig"

In Flare:

- The index editor is cluttered with topic file names. I have to "filter" out the file names to imagine what the index will look like.
- The flow to hook an index keyword to a bookmark in a topic is... a lot of clicks (at least compared to robohelp)
- The index editor is kinda buried, in a small corner of my screen (guess I gotta undock it... heck, I end up undocking everything...)

I have the index feature working OK. Just more of a curve than it needed to be.
