I created a numbered list with
1
a
b
2
a
text
a <- I want a b here but when I try to use Format, List Action, Continue Sequence, the b does not appear.
Does anyone know a fix for this?
Continue Sequence for multi-level list
Re: Continue Sequence for multi-level list
Depends on how you created your list. Here are the steps for the best way to create a list of that format.
- Click the list icon and select numbered list from the drop-down menu.
- Type text for the first bullet. Press Enter to get a second list item.
- Click the indent icon. If the indented list item doesn't automatically appear as a lowercase alpha letter, select that list type from the list drop-down menu.
- Type the text for the first indented bullet. Press Enter to get a second indented list item.
- Type the text for the second indented bullet. Press Enter to get a third indented list item.
- Click the outdent icon to get back to the first level of the list; the list item should automatically start at 2.
- Type the text for that list item, then press Enter to get another first-level list item.
- Click the indent icon to start a new second-level list. I believe this one will automatically start at "a".
- Type the text for the "a" bullet. At the end of the text, click the drop-down arrow to the right of the List Actions icon and select "Make Paragraph Item(s)" (or right-click on the <li> block and select the same option from the popup menu that appears). A <p> tag will appear inside the <li> tag.
- Press Enter. A second <p> tag will appear. Type the text for that sub-paragraph.
- Press Enter to get another paragraph tag. This time click the outdent button to get back to the second-level list; the list item should start automatically with "b". Alternatively, you could click the List Action drop-down menu and select "Make Simple Paragraph" to convert the <p> to a plain <li> tag.

Re: Continue Sequence for multi-level list
Wow. That is a lot of steps. I can't do this function, basically because there are a lot of text blocks, bulleted lists, images, etc., between the a and b. Or, at least it is a crazy amount of clicking around and watching the left bars. I'm a recovering RoboHelp users. It was a simple click of the indent/outdent button. I'll format the text differntly to avoid the numbered lists. Still, this product is suppose to be for P&Ps which tend to have a lot of multi-level numbered lists. Humm...

Re: Continue Sequence for multi-level list
Well, it looks like a lot of steps but once you get the hang of it...
Actually, when I'm faced with this kind of complex nested formatting, my approach is to start by ignoring the numbering/indenting entirely and just type everything as a sequence of paragraphs. Then I select the lot and make it a list (in your case, a numbered list), and then Make Paragraph Item(s) on that list as Lisa suggests. From here I can rapidly indent/renumber/drag-and-drop paragraphs to make the structure I need. I find this a lot easier than trying to format on the fly. YMMV.

Re: Continue Sequence for multi-level list
I also tend to do the list items first, then go back and insert paragraphs, screenshots, captions, etc., as they're needed. When you're in a list, you can click indent to go in a level, but it tends to be the same numbering format, so you'd have to click the list icon to select the other list type. The outdent icon will take you back one level and automatically pick up the numbering for that position.
