Here is something that has vexed me for some time now: I use the font "Arial Black" in my Flare projects for headings and notes. When compiled in WebHelp, the Arial Black text displays correctly in IE and Chrome...but in Firefox it stubbornly shows up as Times Roman!
In my master stylesheet, I was careful to make sure that all my headings use "Arial Black" for print, non-print, and default mediums. I can't understand why Firefox would fail to find the Arial Black font and fall back to a serif replacement like Times New Roman, rather than choosing another san serif font like Arial or Verdana.
Has anyone else encountered this problem? I am using Flare 7.0.1 with Firefox 4.0.1, on Windows 7 Professional (64 bit).
Thanks.
Carl

Re: Arial Black font not displaying in Firefox?
I don't know what's happened, but in order to avoid getting something completely unsuitable as a substitute, you might want to edit your "font-family" attribute to make it a bit more generic, so rather than having
font-family: Arial Black;
you might want
font-family: Arial Black, Arial, sans serif;
Just a thought for a bodge until someone with a proper answer comes along...

Carl, do you test FF on the same system as IE and Chrome? If not, make sure that the font asked for is installed on the FF system. Besides that, never ever assume that font X is available on a system. As ChoccieMuffin pointed out, making it more broad may get you something more along the lines you look for.

Re: Arial Black font not displaying in Firefox?
ChoccieMuffin: Thanks for the tip! I updated all my styles involving Arial Black and am now getting Arial in Firefox. Still not what I want, but at least it's better than Times Roman showing up.
RamonS: Yes, I am running Firefox on the same system as IE and Chrome. Still can't understand why FF would misbehave in this way. I thought Arial Black was reasonably safe as it's a standard font in Windows. But expanding the font family definition as per ChoccieMuffin's suggestion is a reasonable workaround.

Even standard fonts can get uninstalled. That is what I mean by not being able to rest assured that font X is present. And the browsers can also be configured to show their own styles and fonts while ignoring all those that you hammered out in hours of work.
Which version of FF do you use? Any client side style overrides?

I use Firefox 4. I'm not sure about client-side overrides--I don't think there's any. How do I check?
Re: Arial Black font not displaying in Firefox?
Did you manually enter the font name in the stylesheet or use the Stylesheet Editor to select the font from a list? If you manually typed the font in the stylesheet file, make sure you put single quotes around it. Fonts with spaces in the name need to be contained in single quotes.Centauri27 wrote:I thought Arial Black was reasonably safe as it's a standard font in Windows.

One way is the use of the Web Developer toolbar (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefo ... developer/), but there may be others. I only know that it is possible and often used for screen readers who depend on predictable layout and styling, which is only possible by throwing away anything CSS the server sends over.Centauri27 wrote:I use Firefox 4.
