Topic Toolbar missing

Post by 3lliot »

I have a master page that includes a topic toolbar proxy, and I've selected some buttons to include in the topic toolbar in the skin editor (topic toolbar tab), but I'm not seeing any topic toolbars in my webhelp output.

Has anyone else come across this?

I also tried the 'show navigation link at top of topic' and same for 'bottom of topic' in the skin editor (webhelp setup tab) but I'm not seeing those either.

The xml in the skin is:

<TopicToolbar
EnableCustomLayout="true"
Buttons="Back|Forward|Home|PreviousTopic|NextTopic" />

looks ok to me. stumped

What does the source code of a built topic say? Does it include the toolbar? It might be there but not visible ... the toolbar isn't necessarily the origin of the error. You have to look at your stylesheet. Could also be a problem of conflicting javascripts ...

Aha! it's set to invisible, for some reason:

<iframe id="mctoolbar_178384554_0" name="mctoolbar_178384554_0" title="Toolbar" frameborder="0" scrolling="no" style="width: 100%; height: 28px; visibility: hidden;" allowTransparency="true" MadCap:buttonItems="PreviousTopic|NextTopic" src="../../Skin/Toolbar.htm" class="MCTopicToolbar"></iframe>

There's nothing in my stylesheet against MadCap | topicToolbarProxy. there's no attribute for visibility either.

So it's not being hidden in the css, or in the master page, or in the skin, as far as I can see.

That visibility setting is the standard. MC changes that using javascript. And it's not necessarily a style of the toolbar, but could be anything else, really:

Did you set the "position" parameter on some object?
Did you disable a class or a tag in the stylesheet?
Did you add a javascript or an onload parameter in the body tag?
What Flare version do you work with?

Oh and: Can you open the files in Firefox? I'm asking because there's an addon of Firefox called Firebug, which could help you finding the bug.

Did you set the "position" parameter on some object? - nope
Did you disable a class or a tag in the stylesheet? - nope
Did you add a javascript or an onload parameter in the body tag? - nope
What Flare version do you work with? - 7.1.0

- have done - inspecting the published webhelp in firefox I can see that the topic tolbar is set to visible (below). however, that's still not much help.

<iframe id="mctoolbar_178384554_0" class="MCTopicToolbar" frameborder="0" scrolling="no" src="../../Skin/Toolbar.htm" madcap:buttonitems="PreviousTopic|NextTopic" allowtransparency="true" style="width: 64px; height: 28px; visibility: visible;" title="Toolbar" name="mctoolbar_178384554_0">

When I hover over the iframe entry for the topic toolbar in FF / firebug, I can see where it should be (see attached).

But I'm still perplexed why it should be [visibility: hidden] when I open the individual published file from the content folder, and [visbility: visible] when viewed as part of the published webhelp output. I assume when you open default.htm it calls in some javascript that modifies the content. And yet the actual toolbar is invisible in both cases.
You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.

I've seen the toolbar disappear if it contains a javascript error.
In the skin, have you used your own javascript on either the Topic Toolbar tab (the box on the right), or in any of the button onclick actions?

Also, has the toolbar previously worked (if so, what did you change); or is this the first time you've tried it?

Nope, I haven't used any custom code.

The toolbar was there initially by default (if I remember correctly) so I deselected all the buttons so it wouldn't appear (this was before I knew I could take the proxy out of the master page).

Dave,

You mentioned that you've seen the toolbar disappear when there is a java error. That sounds exactly like the problem a colleague of mine is having. The toolbar is not appearing at all, and there is an error message:
"Expected ';' MadCapDefault.js"

Does that sound similar to the problem you mentioned? If so, were you able to resolve it?

Warm regards,

Mark Osborne
