Blank Row at top of some pages

Post by peterbrown05 »

In a pdf output, when my topics split across multiple pages, sometimes there is a carriage return at the top of the page before the next subheading starts.

For example:

Flare html topic looks like this:

Code: Select all

heading 1
blah blah blah
this is the second line of heading 1.

heading 2
blah blah
If the page break happends after "this is the second line of heading 1." the next line is actually a blank carriage return <p></p>
However, it would therefore be much nicer if Heading 2 started at the top of the next page, rather than 1 line down.

so my question is; is it possible to strip this unused white space at the start of a page?

cheers

I doubt there's really a blank paragraph there, unless you had a blank paragraph in the topic itself.

When you have a tag following another tag and each tag has margin or padding values, then larger (or is it smaller?) of those two values is used between the tags. For example, if your h1 tag has a margin-bottom value of 12pt but your h2 tag has a margin-top of 6pt, there will not be 18pt between the two tags. The distance will only be 12pt (or perhaps 6pt, but I'm pretty sure it's the larger value that's used, not the smaller). When the two tags don't fall together, they each have their own defined spacing. So that's why you might see apparent position differences depending on where the h2 tag falls (immediately after an h1 tag or immediately after a page break).

well, for some of my pages your thought about the padding above H1 / H2 styles etc does fit.

However, I attach a few images where you can clearly see that in the flare editor there is a <p></p> after an image. I want the space, however in the printed output the page break falls before the space, so the top of the next page has an extra carriage return.

Its not a complete disaster, and I could live with it; but I wondered if there was the option to remove blank lines at the top of pages via some sort of css/page format/target setting.

I suppose I could set a new paragraph style to force the space but without using a <p></p> this becomes very hard to manage when a lot of the content is written by people who are not involved in the publishing stage and just want to get the content written...

If you want some spacing after the image, could you not just add a bottom margin on the table style that you use for images?

well, this is just one example. i have other pages where I have 2 paragraphs, and there is a line space between the paragraphs.
...maybe you are right and I need to setup a table bottom padding, and a paragraph bottom padding and then just remove all my <p></p>

i suppose I was just hoping there was a tick box somewhere that did it for me!
