Why am I getting this error when the selected default topic does indeed exist?

when are you getting this error?
-when you try to select a default topic?
-when you generate?

When I generate a build. I get the error and the process stops cold.

have you tried picking a new default start topic just to see if it is really a problem with the topic and not a problem with something else?
