Associate Reader with pdf preview instead of full Acrobat

Post by siskamoens »

Hi all,

Not sure if this is the right spot for this question, but this board seemed the closest fit for my problem.

I recently installed a full Adobe Acrobat, and since then the Preview as pdf function on a topic in Madcap Flare uses this to show a preview, instead of the much faster Adobe Reader (which it used before).
I'd like Flare to use the reader again, because that's much more convenient for just looking at a preview, but I haven't yet found where I could do that.

I've checked my extension (file format) associations in Windows (7), and all pdf extensions are nicely associated with Adobe Reader, so no luck there.

Does anyone know where to fix this?

Tnx,
Siska

I don't know a quick way to change the association, but on my PC (running Vista) I found that re-installing Adobe Reader made that the default viewer again.

I'm not sure if Dave's suggestion will work as I haven't seen that behavior work for me, although now that I think about it, it's generally just patching I do, not reinstalling the software, so perhaps installing patches isn't enough to switch the association.

If his suggestion doesn't work, then you can manually change the association. In Windows XP, if you open Windows Explorer then Tools > Folder Options and click the File Types tab, you can select the PDF file type and changes its association from Acrobat to Reader.

I had this same situation, and uninstalling and re-installing Reader worked for me.

Changing the file association didn't work for me, I could set the association to Reader (as siskamoens has) but that didn't affect Flare.

Interesting. Later patches to Acrobat didn't screw up the association?

I'm on Acrobat Pro 6, so there aren't new patches to install; but I've installed Acrobat Pro and Reader a few times now on different PCs. From what I can tell, Flare appears to be associated with whichever application is installed last, as re-installing Reader has worked for me.
