How to number all footnotes unique in a document?

Post by Rene Severens »

Hi,

Question: Is there a way to have all footnotes numbered sequencially within a document?

The idea is to have each footnote numbered unique.

The footnote properties do not seem to have an option to continue numbering, or to specify the number. If entered a number, then the result shown is "0" (zero).

I haven't used footnotes myself, but I would think you'd be able to specify a sequence format in the mc-auto-number-format field in the stylesheet for the footnote style.

it looks like it is standard for footnotes to continue automatically.

also, if footnotes are like variables, etc in flare, they probably won't display properly until you generate your output.

Hi,

I have tried all possible options using autonumber formats, spans, an own creates footnote class, ... but the footnotes refuse to be numbered unique throughout the document, as stated it should do in the help file and style guide documentation.

Thanks for all tips. I am heavily longing back to a plain old typewriter, where I am sure I get whatever character or number I want on the correct place by just hitting ... 1 and 1 key only. I give up.

At this point I'd ask support. Then again, since footnotes are intended to be references on that page I am not entirely sure why there is a need to have them sequentially numbered throughout the document.

What output are you publishing to, Word or PDF? I just tried adding a couple of test footnotes to a little document that I'm working on, and PDF worked as documented in the Flare Help, but Word did not. You may have found a bug that needs to be reported to Madcap.

Hi,

I guess that for the desired for this document the functionality of CSS3/ HTML5 needs to be included into MadCap Flare.

Don't you just hate it when the next thing happens to you when trying to create a document:

PS. An online MadCap consultant session has been requested to look into this. I will post the result when available.

Hi,

as promised, the online meeting result for this item is, that it is a bug. However, now moved to Flare 8, this did not occur anymore.
