"Subsetting"/including fonts with WebHelp?

Post by kevinmcl »

Using Flare 7.2 up to last week, and now Flare 8 on Windows 7.

When I write a document in some authoring tool, and generate PDF output, I can choose to include our corporate font, so that customers see the document as I wrote it. Or, I can "subset" the chosen font, which includes that font as part of the PDF, for every character I've used, but not other characters that I have not used.

With WebHelp, I've been accustomed to just letting the browser choose whatever substitute the customer's computer happens to have for Arial (or other default).

How do I provide a complete or a subsetted font within WebHelp (or now, HTML5 help), so that I can at least allow (not force) customers to see the help as I created it? Yes, there are still big holes in my edjumacation.

For example, there's the @font-face CSS element, but I'm not clear on where that's to be found in a Flare project.
If I'm embedding a font with a PDF, all that's necessary is that the font be installed on my system, and the rest is automagic.
But I think just having the desired font available to Windows when I make a Flare project doesn't seem to be enough. I select the font for twenty or thirty important styles in my project stylesheet, and I see that font when I review my published project, but when I ask the receptionist (who doesn't have the font) to view my Help, she sees Arial and Verdana. So I'm missing something.

I'm pretty sure that you can't do this with WebHelp. (If I'm wrong, I'm sure this will trigger someone to speak up. :)

Using @font-face would work, but you'd have to enter the CSS in text mode (not using the Flare stylesheet editor).
You'll need to copy the font files (ttf, eot) into the project, and link them from the stylesheet.
There's an example on w3schools: http://www.w3schools.com/cssref/css3_pr ... e_rule.asp
