How Do I Create Complex Selectors to Control Lists

Post by holmesdm »

I would appreciate help in creating complex selectors to control lists.

I need to create a complex selector for a numbered list (decimal) that allows me to use an indented bullet (circle) within the numbered list.
I also need to create a complex selector 3 levels deep using the Bullet List, Circle Bullet List and Square Bullet List.

How do I complete these task?

Complex selectors is definitely a new concept for me to grasp so if you could make this as simple as possible to understand, that would help.

I looked at the some of the previous posting, but did not see any references as to whether or not the default settings should be removed to enable the styling you want to work. For example, in the default Styles.css in Flare, I see the following ol ul settings in the text editor.

ol,
ul
{
margin-top: 0px;
margin-bottom: 0px;
}

When creating complex selectors, are there any inherited tags that you need to remove or comment out?

Use the "Try it yourself" interactive areas at http://www.w3schools.com/css/css_list.asp to test whatever you think you'd like to see. It's a great learning tool that allows for instant feedback. Maybe you could start with some of the samples provided by Dave Lee in the link in his earlier post.

Good luck,

Hint: If you have procedurals or options listed inside tables, as we do, you might want to reduce the amount of indent (to save real estate). Simply use the table cell selector (td) with the list selector (ol/ul); for example, a bullet list outside a table and inside a table:

Code: Select all

ul
{
	list-style-type: square;
	margin-top: 0px;
	padding-top: 0px;
	padding-left: 15px;
	margin-left: 15px;
}

td ul
{
	list-style-type: square;
	margin-top: 0px;
	padding-top: 0px;
	padding-left: 8px;
	margin-left: 8px;
}

Good luck,
Leon
