Unable to save Contributor file back to SharePoint

When reviewing a Contributor file that has been uploaded to SharePoint and making any changes, we are unable to save our changes back to the SharePoint site. It does save it, however, it saves it to our local computers instead of back to the SharePoint site. I have already ensured that team members have needed site permissions and do not see an option through SharePoint that would cause or prevent this. I am left to assume it may be something regarding the Contributor file itself. Is there something that needs to be done in the Contributor file before uploading it to SharePoint? Any guidance on this issue would be most helpful.
