Set positioning of the a.Popup target style

Post by nickatwork »

Hi all,
I'm using MCs Popup style that available for links etc to open a couple of flash videos that I've made in Mimic. The idea is that I want them to remain in my web help without opening another window for the video to play in. So I have embedded the flash controls in the video and want it to open as a popup.
It works, to a degree, but I now need to format this style to get it perfect.
The 2 issues I have are:
1 - the size of the pop-up. I can not change it. It seems a variable based on the size of the topic pane. I want to set it to a specific width and height. I tried changing the mc-popup-height and mc-popup-width properties but this hasn't done anything. I've checked the stylesheet medium settings etc.

2 - because I can set the size, I want to set the position where the popup opens. Currently it will open exactly from where the mouse is click, with the popup spanning down and to the right. I want to instead position it specifically on scree. I tried setting padding and margin options hoping it might do something but nothing worked.

Any help much appreciated.
Thanks,
Nick

I'm chiming in here for two (2) reasons. First, I'd like to learn how, if it's possible, to get topic popups to appear exactly where I want and sized to my specifications. My experiments with MadCap|popup haven't worked to my satisfaction.

Second, Nick, I will share my workaround. Here's my all-purpose snippet:

Code: Select all

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<html>
    <body><a id="_m2_Editing_v_quiz" name="_m2_Editing_v_quiz"></a>
        <MadCap:dropDown MadCap:conditions="cond.ScreenOnly">
            <MadCap:dropDownHead>
                <div>
                    <table class="video_snippet">
                        <col />
                        <col class="video_icon_width" />
                        <tr>
                            <td>
                                <p><span class="label">Quiz</span>: <a href="../../../Videos/02_Editing/m2_Editing_v_quiz.swf" target="_blank" title="Lesson: Editing Quiz Video in resizable window" alt="Lesson: Editing Quiz Video in resizable window"><MadCap:variable name="var.Product" /> Editing</a><MadCap:keyword term="Quiz:Editing" /><MadCap:keyword term="Editing:Quiz" /></p>
                            </td>
                            <td>
                                <MadCap:dropDownHotspot>
                                    <img class="video_icon" src="../../../Images/icons/shell32_238-48x48.png" title="Editing Quiz Video" alt="Editing Quiz Video" />
                                </MadCap:dropDownHotspot>
                                <MadCap:keyword term="video" />
                            </td>
                        </tr>
                    </table>
                </div>
            </MadCap:dropDownHead>
            <MadCap:dropDownBody>
                <div class="video">
                    <object src="../../../Videos/02_Editing/m2_Editing_v_quiz.swf" style="width: 800px; height: 600px;">
                    </object>
                </div>
            </MadCap:dropDownBody>
        </MadCap:dropDown>
        <MadCap:snippetBlock src="../../no_video_for_print.flsnp" />
    </body>
</html>
If the user clicks the link on the left side I open a new browser window to host my SWF. If the user clicks the dropdown on the right side then the video appears inline at a fixed px of 800x600. Since the browser window is resizeable the user can grow or shrink the video to any size they want.

I prefer this solution for videos. But I would still like to be able to popup textual content that only renders scrollbars when there is a lot of content in the popup. Most of the time these popups are more like glossary entries in size, not multi-paragraph prose.

Hope this helps.

Yeah I have used them in drop-downs, it works, and its not terrible, but I'd defintely like to have to option and gain some feedback from users. The popup could be handy as it would avoid scrolling to make the video fit the height of the frame. I've set all my topic panes and images etc so that resizing never has to be done unless they want to and scrolling is only necessary to move up and down while reading.

I sent a support request to madcap to see if they had anything useful to help, still waiting even after chasing. Not the best from them this week. NVM.
Ill post back if/when I hear something.
Nick.

So reply from MC is there is no way to reposition the popup style. A bug report has been submitted and it 'might' get fixed in the future.

In the mean time I will have to use drop-downs. Best solution so far. Also, I'd say report it if you want it. Power in numbers.

Thanks,

I keep doing that since version 3, with each new version ... seems not a lot of people are using popups ... or the javascript programmer that did that bit of code has left MadCap ...

Thanks,
Nick, have you heard back about if MC has fixed / included a way to reposition a popup style image/video?
Thank you for your comments and help with my quandary ...
