Variables Missing from WebHelp

Post by rmdavidson »

I've found that my variables are showing when I either Build Primary or View Primary and click the button to View Output in Flare I see my variables, but when I publish to WebHelp and view it, they aren't always there. There are no condition tags applied to any variables. Any ideas?

Thanks,

Robin

Do you have more than one variable set? Did you at any time rename the variable set? If so, did you double-check in the WebHelp target that it's pointing to the correct variable set? Since you can also override the variable's value in the target, double-check that you didn't inadvertently delete the variable value in the target.

Also, do you have any styles (span classes) around the variables and perhaps have the span class set to either hide the contents or change its font color to match the background, for example?

I do have more than one variable set in this project, but they're different things. One set is company-related (company name, software name, etc) and the other is a feature related one since they may be making changes to what things are called I used variables so I can fix it easier. Also, I have a globally linked project that I had deleted from the TOC since I couldn't get it to quit showing despite using excluded condition tags and I wasn't ready to publish it which has variables, but they don't affect the pages I've seen with missing variables. They aren't part of that page in any way I mean. It is weird that viewing it in Flare and Firefox from my C Drive I see the variables, but live on the website they were either blank (missing word entirely) or had "missing variable data" in place of the variable. I put an old version with no variables (I've been having to add them myself as there were none in the project) in the page's place for now since there weren't any content changes. The only span class I may have around some of the variables just makes it bold and nothing else. What is weird as well is that another page which uses that variable set still has variables showing. I'm baffled.

I looked at the page in question again and there are no styles around these variables. I didn't think there was on this page.

Does the code look like this:

Code: Select all

<MadCap:variable name="MyVariableSet.MyFirstVariable" />
Is the MyVariableSet.flvar file located in your project's Project\VariableSets folder?

Good luck,
Leon

Yeup, they're both there in the local C: folder. There aren't any from the child project, but I'm not sure if there should be since I'm assuming that's all in the Imports folder in the Import file. But, those aren't the ones that are missing anway.

Could you post the code from one of your topics of a paragraph that contains a variable that isn't showing up in the output?

Also, if you create a new online output target (don't modify it) and build it, are the variables still missing?

No, I can't. :-( We have our Help password protected. The only thing in the body of the code is a header tag, a left-aligned image, our standard paragraph tags, and one span which does nothing but bold text (not applied to any variables). There is of course also the variable tags such as <Madcap:variable name="Primary.Fversion" />.

I haven't tried a new target since it looks fine when I do a view primary and it is when I actually put it out live that it is missing. Also, it is only on one page that I have seen. Other pages with the same variables I've checked are still showing the variables.

Thanks,
