Problems reverting to Flare 6.1 after trial of v8

Post by loftwork »

I used v8 to see if it resolved some MSWord import issues, and it did. Worked fine until the trial expired and I had to revert to v6. Experienced unhandled exception error etc. which were resolved by removing HTML5 skins from the project and re-saving it. But now I'm having real problems with page layouts. These are PDF print mode and worked fine in v8, but now I'm unable to insert almost anything into page layout header and footer frames. Insert variables works fine on main frame content, but the usual edit variable set dialogue in the header/footer contents pane has vanished. The local insert variables icon has disappeared and the Insert menu shows almost everything as unavailable, including insert variables, insert tables etc. The Select Frame Text dialogue works, but anything useful like chapternumber-pagenumber is impossible.

I've tried uninstalling, reinstalling and re-importing the MSWord file, and I've tried using a new sample project. No change. The page layouts icons are also gone - duplicate a page layout and you still have only one page, so can't assign and select Normal/Title/First etc.

This is a real roadblock. Probably something simple but I can't spot it.

Most of this (Insert Variables) works in v8 but the page layouts (Normal, First etc) do not have selection icons in either v8 or v6. If you duplicate a layout you still have only one layout, the more recent one.

"How to insert a page into a page layout

1.Open the page layout. The Page Layout Editor opens.
2.In the local toolbar, click , and from the drop-down select Add Page. A new untitled page is added to the page layout. A small rectangle is added to the right of the page layout, which can be used to open the new page."

There is no avenue to take a project from 8 back to 6.1. If you have use a backup of the project that never saw v8. Unfortunately, you have to do all work over again.

OK - so the fact they can co-exist does not mean that v8 files can reverse leverage back to v6.1. Thanks Ramon.

Thinking about it, that doesn't explain the vanishing page layout selection icons, since they are now invisible in both v6 and v8, which makes it very difficult to manage title, normal, empty etc. layouts. It also doesn't explain why the v6 method of inserting variables in footers doesn't work in v6 even when you uninstall both versions of Flare, delete all projects, re-install v6, and reimport from Word. Very strange.

Probably well-known to everyone else, but after some help from Tech Support, found the Show Page Overview Bar icon which toggles the page layout selections on the default page layout. Strange behavior, still haven't found a sequence which always displays it but a combination of docking, floating and re-docking seems to work. Variable insertion requires that you select the local footer or header, doesn't work using the default layout page. However HTML5 skins from v8 still do not die gracefully when reverting to v6.
