Update Cross References option is greyed out. WHY?!!!

I need to update the cross-references in some topics as part of a process for tracking UL and OL errors in the code. But when I open the topics, Tools>Update Cross References is greyed out. Can anyone tell me why this might be?

You mention that you're trying to fix errors in the code. When you say you open the topics, are you opening them in the internal text editor, not the XML Editor? The Update Cross-References command works only when you're using the XML Editor, not the internal code editor.

I'm trying to open them in the XML editor but Flare crashes instantly, every time. I have reported this to support and they are looking into it. I can open them in the text editor mode, but as you pointed out, the update cross references tool isn't available.
