How to display bookmarks in TOC?

Post by ScanJourWriter »

In my team we are about to change to Flare from RoboHelp. Currently I am doing some preliminary testing on how to convert a RH project to a Flare project.

In RH I could easily drag bookmarks for a particular topic from the Project viewer to the TOC. Then, in the TOC it would be displayed as a subtopic.

In Flare, I want to have the bookmarks displayed in the TOC in the same manner, but I do not know how to make the bookmarks visible, neither in the Content Explorer or in the TOC. Anyone out there who knows how to do that?

Thanks

Hi,
Not quite sure what you are trying to achieve. Probably just confusion between RH and Flare terminology or I'm just too tired after the long weekend.
Let me see if I have this right, you want to put a bookmark (not a topic) in to your TOC.

In Flare you don't have bookmarks in the project or content explorer (I don't think so anyway). To do that, I'd say drag the topic in to the TOC, then right-click > Properties > General > click that little red book icon (bookmark) next to the Link field and select the bookmark.

Of course if you're putting a bookmark in to a topic, it's a lot easier (Insert > Bookmark)

Hope that helps...by the way, I came across from RH 8 to Flare over a year ago, it is faaar better IMO, though I haven't played with RH9.

I don't think Flare has a view where you can see the bookmarks in a topic, although I haven't actually looked.

The way I'd do this would be to drag the topic containing the bookmark to the TOC to add it. Then I'd right-click on the entry and select Properties. In the General tab, it has a field showing the link path with a couple of icons to the right of it. The bookmark one looks like an open book with a red bookmark on the left page. Click that to bring up a screen showing all the headings and bookmarks in that topic and select the one you want. It sounds like it's a few more steps than in RoboHelp, but it has an option that RH might not have -- if you point to a heading in the topic then you don't need to create the bookmark in the topic first; Flare will automatically add the bookmark to the topic. The only time you need to create a bookmark in the topic first is if you're pointing to a specific paragraph or other item that isn't in a heading tag.

EDIT: Oops, overlapped with Nick.

Thank you both for the reply.

Basically, this is what I want to achieve:

In RH, I have assigned bookmarks to the headings in my topics. I use the bookmarks to facilitate navigation in the TOC. This means that when I drag a topic to a particular book topic in the TOC, automatically the bookmarks appear as subtopics in the TOC (I need to rename them of course, because the bookmark names with underscores are used).

When I created a new Flare project using the import existing RH project feature, the bookmarks were displayed in the same way in the Flare TOC. However, when creating new topics in Flare and adding bookmarks to the headings, and finally dragging the topic to the TOC, the bookmarks are not displayed.

If there is no way of doing this, I will need to create new topics for each subsection in my topics in order to have them displayed in TOC - which I want to avoid because it takes more time than I have.

I tried out your suggestion, but it did not do the trick.

Any ideas?

There's not a way to do what you want in the TOC.

Instead of having separate entries in the TOC for the subheadings in the topic, you could insert a mini-TOC proxy in the topic, or put it in the masterpage so it's automatically there for every topic. I don't use the mini-TOC in this manner, but I believe others do something similar. You'd then just have the one topic in the TOC, but once the user went to that topic, they'd see all the headings in that topic.
