Outputting a part of a project - best way to TOC

Post by straygoat »

Hi everyone,

I've been asked to output just one folder of our (large) help system as a stand-alone help. I know this is just going to be a case of creating a new target, but what is the best way (i.e. quickest) of creating the TOC for it? At the moment, we just have one TOC which contains everything - could I just copy that and delete all of the folders not needed for this new target? Or is there a better way?

There is probably going to be more need for this type of thing going forward, so if there is a solution that is a bit more work now, but better in the long-run, that'd be good to know.

Thanks

New Target is probably best. Though you don't HAVE to.

You could use your existing target and TOC and create conditionals that are a one-off build and apply these where you need. Though it can get messy after a while if you're doing it a lot.

I'd probably copy/paste both the target and TOC, rename them and strip out what you don't need in the TOC, link that to your 'new' target and away you go. Also set your new target to only include what's in the TOC so you don't need to worry about conditions etc.
I do this ALL the time for bespoke PDFs that people want. I just copy the relevant sections from the main TOC in to a 'One Off' TOC that I have and build my 'One Off' target. Works a treat.

I'd create a new target and a new TOC.

For a once-off process, copying the TOC and then deleting elements would work fine. It is also pretty quick to create a new TOC and drag the folder into it from the Content Explorer (or open the TOCs side by side and drag).
Something to note, though, is that Flare TOCs can include other TOCs. If you are going to create this sub-document often in the future, then I'd create a new TOC for that section, then delete those parts from the original, and finally, drag the new TOC into the right spot in the original TOC. Doing this will make sure that you don't have maintenance problems later on.
