Welcome to the forums! Nice to "see" you here.

First, you'll want to set up a style that uses auto-numbering. Check out this topic in Flare 8's Help system: http://webhelp.madcapsoftware.com/flare ... Styles.htm. In the middle of that topic is an example explaining specifically how to set up figure titles. Once the style is in place, you can then apply it to the paragraph that you want to serve as the figure title.

Next, I assume that you'll want to create cross-references to the figure titles. First you'll need to create a bookmark in each figure title (http://webhelp.madcapsoftware.com/flare ... Topics.htm), and then you can add cross-references to the figure title; check out http://webhelp.madcapsoftware.com/flare ... Topics.htm as well as http://webhelp.madcapsoftware.com/flare ... ormats.htm.

Finally, if you want to create a list of figures, you'll need to set up a list-of proxy. Read http://webhelp.madcapsoftware.com/flare ... Images.htm.

Hope this helps (and doesn't overwhelm).

So far, so good, but I am trying to place a bookmark in the h6 heading, but cannot get my cursor to go to the front of my heading. It will do if for both my h1 and h2 headings, though. What is going on?

Thanks

I am still trying to work through this problem. It appears that I cannot create a bookmark for a heading that has an auto-number assigned to it. Can anybody help me with this? I am still working on it, but cannot find a resolution. Thanks.

Not sure what you mean by you can't put a bookmark in the front of the heading. If you place your cursor somewhere on that line of text then press the Home key then it'll take you to the beginning of the tag's content and you can insert a bookmark.

If that still doesn't work for some reason, then you could open another topic and create a xref to the h6 topic, or the h6 tag in a topic if the h6 tag isn't the first heading. Flare will automatically insert a bookmark when you create the xref and save the source topic. Once that's done, you can delete the xref in the source topic and I believe the bookmark in the destination topic will remain, although you'll have to double-check.

And just to clarify, if your h6 tag has an auto-number format, then you won't be able to put the bookmark in front of the auto-number text, nor would you need to. The bookmark will be inserted between the auto-number text and the heading text. When you insert a xref and select the option to include the paragraph number, you'll get the auto-number text. If your xref has paragraph text, then you'll get the heading text without the auto-number. (I think that's how it works -- I'm writing this from memory.)

Thank you for your prompt reply. I figured out my problem based on your information and Help. I have to modify my stylesheet in order for the appropriate text to show up. So, for other people who may have my same problem:
1. Modify the xref style that you want to use to read however you would like, based upon the commands available in Flare. I created a ({paratext}{paranum}) format.
2. When I entered my bookmark into the topic, I placed the cursor at the end of the heading (making sure that the bracket looked like this: "]") and clicked on the "Bookmark" icon on the "Insert" tab in the ribbon.
3. I named the bookmark from the "Manage Bookmarks" screen.
4. A flagged bookmark appeared after the text (heading in this case) that I chose to identify the bookmark.
5. I placed my cursor where I wanted my cross reference to appear. I clicked on the "Cross Reference" icon under the "Insert" tab in the ribbon.
6. I clicked on the bookmark text in the screen that I wanted the xref to reference.
7. It appeared!

Thanks for your help!

Everything looked right in my PDF output as well.

I am able to make the figure numbers for my pictures perfectly fine. I also created a style to make table numbers as well for all the tables I am using and it also uses the autonumber feature. The issue I am now having is that if n=3 because I have three table in succession and I am now inserting my second figure number for my second image in my topic which comes after those 3 images, n already equals 3 so it is making my figure number 4 instead of 2 because it is continuing the step from my table numbering styles instead of from my previous figure number styles. Is there any way to alter this so that the value n stays consistent with my table number styling and doesn't affect my figure number styling?

Thank you,
Garrett

Hi Garrett. Welcome!

(pant pant pant)

I still don't have a lot of time today, but it sounds like you haven't included a "series" label (such as T for table and F for figures) in your auto-number formats, so Flare can't distinguish between tables and figures. I really apologize for having no time to answer at length, but go study the autonumber format examples at http://webhelp.madcapsoftware.com/flare ... s%7C_____2. See the examples for "CF:Figure blah blah" and "CT:Table blah blah"? That "F" and "T" distinguish figures from tables, and the C means that Flare should increment only within a Chapter. Once a new chapter begins, Flare will reset the figure numbers and table numbers back to 1.

Maybe someone else can jump in to give our new friend Garrett some love.

Aaaaaaaaaand that worked perfectly Nita. Thank you so much for the help. Also, apologies for taking so long to get back with a response. That solved my issue and everything is running smoothly now!
