Deleting Breadcrumbs?

Post by erinep23 »

I was having super horrible issues with Breadcrumbs and formatting, so I decided just to create my own using hyperlinks. But now when I am publishing, the breadcrumbs are showing up, and I don't want them to! They look jacked. What can I do?

Remove the breadcrumbProxy from your masterpage(s).

I removed the breadcrumb proxy from the Master page, but all it did was remove the top breadcrumb. I still have related topic breadcrumbs at the bottom of the page....

It sounds like you're confusing breadcrumbs and mini-TOCs. The links in your screenshot are generated from a mini-TOC proxy. Is there a mini-TOX proxy on the master page? If yes, delete it and that should solve the problem.

BTW, without meaning to sound criticizing, I think you're missing out on the power of proxies if you decide not to use them and instead to build things like breadcrumbs paths and mini-TOC links by hand. The beauty of those proxies is that you can freely restructure your TOC and then let Flare generate the breadcrumbs and mini-TOCs accordingly. Furthermore, if you ever create a different Help target using some but not all of the same topics -- or put the topics in a different order on that new target's TOC -- your hardcoded "breadcrumb" paths and "mini-TOCs" won't be correct for that target.

If you decide that you would like to use mini-TOC proxies, you can style the p.miniTOC1, p.miniTOC2, etc., in your stylesheet to get them looking just the way you want. If you want to get rid of the line above the mini-TOC, you'll need to edit the style for the proxy itself and change that top border to the same color as the background of your Help topics so that it is camoflauged. That line is being inherited from the MadCap.css so needs to be overridden by the stylesheet associated with your target.

Thank you for the advice. I do plan on using proxies, but this was a very quick documentation, and not knowing MadCap the way I should, I did (what I thought) was the easy way out. I do plan on using proxies in the future after I have learned more about them, how they work, and how I can modify them.
