My company uses a crapload of variables. Like 38 pages of them. We selectively remove them from our Frame source before importing because of these problems:
*Variables in callouts do not get included in the images that Flare renders.
*Variables in headings create problems with topic naming. Topics become chaptername_X.htm rather than headingname.htm.
A slight annoyance is that variables do not appear in the topic preview screen, so it makes the validation process a bit tricky.
One thing that would speed up the file cleansing process would be to just nuke all of the Frame variables and then do a "find text and replace with variable" after the import.
Is it possible to search text and replace with a variable, within the Flare interface? I cannot find anything that stands out in the text search tool or help.
Frame Variables: Save or Discard and Replace After Import
Re: Frame Variables: Save or Discard and Replace After Import
You can use a find and replace in text mode, and replace the text with the code for the variable; e.g. <MadCap:variable name="MyVariables.VariableName" />
Just be careful, as it'll also find matches in things like filenames too. It's probably a good idea to make a backup before you start.

Thanks, Dave! I think it will be quicker to nuke them now. I appreciate your help.
