Linked/imported topic file location

Post by clxmichelle »

I think I've read all the help info about imported topics that are linked from another project, but I can't figure out how to affect the file location once it's imported. When I move the file into a folder, it seems to create a copy (screenshot attached). Is it possible to move the linked file to a subfolder in the main directory?

Thanks for any help.

When using global project linking to import from one project to another, the files are automatically stored in the same location as the project they were imported from. I think this makes sense, because if you later reimport content, the project that you're importing from isn't aware of any changes you've made in the local project.

Thanks techwriter31.

Anyone got tips for organizing imported files? Moving the topics into folders and trying to reimport doesn't seem to change anything.

Deleting the import file & linked topics in the destination project and redoing the import after putting the topics in a file with the same name in the source project solves my issue in this instance, but it seems like a long way to go if I am trying to single source content.

If there's a better way, do tell.

For some of our front matter content (Legal Notices, etc.), I store these topics in the "global"/parent project and import it into all of the child projects. These topics are stored in a "Global_Topics/FrontMatter" folder in the parent project. When imported to the local/child project, I can quickly identify that this is imported content and I never attempt to move or modify them. I'll usually also have a "xxxx_Topics/FrontMatter" folder in the child project for topics that are specific to that child project (where "xxxx" is the product identifier for the child project).

Here's a post that provides some detail in regards to how I structure my projects:
