Headers with text aligned to left and right
I am creating PDF output to match our company's Word styles. We don't have unique left/right pages; the text in the headers is like this:
Document Title (left-aligned) (space here) Section Title (right-aligned)
(entire header area has a half-point blue line/border underneath)
How can I create this alignment in my right and left layout pages? I tried inserting separate header frames, but that ended up with text overwriting when the content went to the next page.
A separate question: what setting do I use to get the topics to flow from one to another instead of starting a new page with each topic?
Thanks!

If you don't have unique left and right pages, then I don't think you should have them in the page layout. Instead just define a Normal page and delete the left and right definitions - you might like to do this in a copy of your project, to make sure you don't accidentally lose something important.
I think you've probably got page-break-before specified for each topic heading style in your stylesheet. If all your topic headings are H1, then go into your stylesheet, select H1 and ensure page-break-before is set to avoid. You may have to define this in the Print medium, rather than Default.

Re: Headers with text aligned to left and right
I find the easiest way to get text aligned both right and left in the header is to insert a table in the header with two columns (one row).
Put the text you want right justified in the right cell and left justified text in the left.
Put the text you want right justified in the right cell and left justified text in the left.

Re: Headers with text aligned to left and right
Thanks to both of you! I think the table solution will work, and yes, h1 had page break before set to always, so I changed that in the print medium.
I am preserving the left/right pages because, although our company style doesn't need it, I also plan to use this template as a basis for projects we might do for clients who might have different needs (we do a lot of contract work). Though I suppose it would be easy enough to create left/right pages when needed.
Anyway, thanks again.

Re: Headers with text aligned to left and right
The table solution worked perfectly. Thanks!
I still cannot get the topics to flow. I've changed all the heading levels to avoid page breaks before (edit: in first just the print medium stylesheet, then also in the default), and yet there are still page breaks before each new topic in the PDF output. Am I missing another setting somewhere? Thanks!

Re: Headers with text aligned to left and right
In the TOC Properties, did you set each topic to be the start of a new chapter and specified a page layout, or did you only specify that in one topic and all the others are inheriting that setting?MarinaMichaels wrote:I still cannot get the topics to flow. Re: Headers with text aligned to left and right
I specified the page break settings for each topic. If I only set those settings for the chapter-level topics, then all the topics run together, which is sort of what I want, except that I want a break at the chapter-level topics, and that isn't working. I'll keep experimenting with the settings. Thanks!
Re: Headers with text aligned to left and right
Could your topics start with a heading style that has set?
Code: Select all
page-break-before: always Marjorie

Thanks...no, all the heading styles are set to avoid page breaks before. But that was a good thought.

Re: Headers with text aligned to left and right
Following up: I have figured out how to get the various topics to flow or start on a new page; everything looks good. Thank you, everyone, for your help.
