delay upgrade to 9?

Post by esachs »

Is there any way to disable the auto-update from Flare 8 to Flare 9? I am just learning Flare and I don't want to deal with changes until I have things under control.

Thanks

Flare doesn't auto-update from v8 to v9.

Flare will only inform you of updates to the same version, e.g. v8 to v8.1; and it doesn't automatically install the updates anyway.

Although if you're just learning Flare and you have the free upgrade to v9 (as part of a maintenance plan), then you might want to upgrade anyway. There are some things that don't work in v8 that were fixed in v9, so you'll save yourself some headache if you start from the newest release.

Let me give a little more detail. I am part of a team that is transitioning from Frame to Flare. There are a couple of people - not me - who have been using Flare for about a year in a limited way. Now we have to roll it out across the whole team and we want to be all on the same version. Our time frame is pretty aggressive (impossible), so a major update - particularly a point zero zero release - is too much of a risk factor, however good it might be in the long run.

In addition, I went to install Flare on my home computer and got 9.0. I thought I'd go ahead and install it, because I could use some features (for example Frame template conversion) and then pull them across to my older version on my work computer. But I got a warning from my antivirus program. I contacted Flare tech support and their advice left me with a blue screen and the need to run system restore in Safe Mode. Realistically, I think it's a false positive from the antivirus program and these problems are surmountable. But I and the rest of my team want to deal with this in our own time, when we feel we have the cycles for this, and not in the middle of a big project.

Now the people on my team who have been on Flare a long time are getting prompts to upgrade. I haven't seen them & don't know how aggressive they are. But it would be great just to say, "Leave me alone for a while, I'm too busy to do this, remind me a month."

Flare will not prompt you to update v8 to v9.

Upgrades to major versions are not automatic, as not everyone is entitled to an update. If you're entitled to an update (e.g. on a maintenance plan), MadCap will send out an email with a download link and new licence key.

Perhaps check with your team what the actual update is - if they're using v8, then it is probably to v8.1.2.
