Multi-Monitor support (or lack thereof)

Post by QuadraQ »

I'm getting frustrated with Flare 9 and trying to use it with my multi-monitor setup. I like to put some of the windows on my second monitor, but when I restart the program any windows I've moved to the other monitor won't display and I have to manually display them and move them around again ( very irritating). I've tried saving my configuration to a profile and that didn't help.

Am I the only one who's using Flare with more than one monitor?!?

No, I'm using multiple monitors, and I know Rob from Madcap does (he posted a picture in this thread http://forums.madcapsoftware.com/viewto ... 13&t=16709). I don't seem to be experiencing any issues (not that I remember, I don't have Flare/ multiple monitors here in the office). I'll check when I'm on the home office setup...

QuadraQ - do you happen to remote into the box at times? When I work from home once in a while and remote into my office PC is gunks up all of the window positions and sizes.

I'm only guessing, but I think QuadraQ is talking about opening one instance of Flare, and floating a file on the second monitor. Thus, when Flare is closed and re-opened, the 'same' files are all opened correctly - it's just that none of them are floating anymore.

One other thing to check is if you close Flare with the windows maximized on the second monitor. I found with other applications that this causes them to not properly store the last window position at all times. Try this: place the windows on the second monitor, restore them down to be not full screen, close Flare, start Flare. If the windows now show in the correct spot maximize them to full screen and restart Flare. Of course, if you do not run the windows maximized then forget about all this.

Part of the frustration here is that I have other applications that *do* remember their position on my second (or third) monitor, but when I use my laptop undocked, and open those applications, those windows don't appear on my undocked display. I have to do all kinds of acrobatics to get them back onto the main laptop display.

If MC is going to make this possible in a future version, I hope they put in the smarts to detect whether multiple displays are connected, because it needs to move all the windows back onto the main display when multiple displays are NOT connected.

This is a daily frustration for me as well. I filed a bug report (it worked fine in previous versions) and got the following response:

"...
Thank you for contacting MadCap Support.

I was able to replicate this behavior on my machine and this is a known bug. I have added your information to the bug and you will be notified when a fix for this is implemented.

Please note that I have submitted a Bug Report on your behalf (#55913) with our development team and you will be notified via email if a fix for this is included in a future patch or release version.

..."

I really hope this gets dealt with fast!

I just wonder how much control MadCap will have over that. I find this a problem with other applications as well when I remote in from home. What some applications do seems to be checking the current resolution. If the x/y stored in the registry for a window is outside of that range or if the window with its saved size won't fit the window is displayed in the default location. Unfortunately, that overrides the original position and when dual screen is back available everything stays glued to one monitor. Things would me so much easier if Windows had multiple desktops that can be cycled through or placed on multiple monitors like it is a decade old feature for X based desktop on Linux systems. Would also be nice if terminal services would properly support multiple monitors, but that isn't something MadCap can fix.
A solution might be to detect the attached monitors and the resolution and keep multiple sets of window positions for one, two, three, or four monitor operation.
