Trial Flare Version Limitation Question

Post by rwilson »

Using a trial version (v.9) of Flare and climbing the learning curve. I tried importing an HTML Help (.chm) file, and some images (screenshots & diagrams; gif, png, & jpg files) were brought in, but others (most) were not. All images are present and visible in the .chm file. I'm wondering if this problem is caused by some limitation of the trial version. If this is not a trial version limitation, I'll try to troubleshoot this elsewhere.

Hi. Welcome to the forums!

As far as I know, the only limitation of the trial version is that your output will have scrambled letters, rendering it unusable as an actual Help system or publication. But you can otherwise exercise every feature of Flare. So I don't think the cause of your problem with images has anything to do with Flare's being in trial mode. Unfortunately, I've not otherwise run into this issue so don't have a suggestion to offer.

Anyone else have an idea to help our newbie out?

I can only speculate, but after importing a CHM I noticed that all images were placed into one image folder in the project. I wonder what happens when images are named the same, but have different content, which is not a problem as long as they are in separate folders in the original project. Speaking of which, do you have access to the original project? That may yield better results than decompiling the CHM. If that is the case you should not see the image in the applicable topic in Flare as well.
As far as trial goes, the only restriction I know of is garbled letters in the output.....hmmmmmmmm, maybe the letter garbling also garbled some links to the image files and that causes them not to show up? Could try to regenerate the output a few times and see if some images now show up and others do not. You can also check the source of one of the topics in the CHM created. Open the help in the CHM viewer, navigate to the topic with missing images, right-click into the topic pane, select View Source command, and then see where the link to the image file is and what it points to, then compare to what you have in the Flare project.
