Where are "links" stored?

Post by kevinmcl »

When Flare introduced "View Links", I thought that links were simply part of topic files, and that "View Links" would simply run through the project and find any topics or graphics or other items that named the selected page in a link.

BUT...
It is my practice to deprecate pages/topics.
When a feature or capability of a product changes radically, or when a new feature makes an old one obsolete, I write a new page/topic, and I keep the old one, but mark it "Deprecated", so that existing product users can see both the old and the new, and have some time to convert to the new way, once they see the advantages. (The product interface also usually keeps the old way for a while, to accommodate existing customers who might have scripts and procedures using the old way, unless the old way has become a security hazard.)

After a couple or three releases, I remove the deprecated stuff.
First, though, I do a "View Links", to ensure that no other pages link to one I'm about to delete.
I go to such other pages and update/remove any links to the deprecated page.
I "Save all".
I highlight the to-be-deleted page/topic again and "View Links".......... and it is still showing the other pages linking to this one.
I go back and look at those other pages, and there are no visible links.
To make bloody sure, I open those other pages in a text editor and search for mention of the to-be-deleted topic.
I don't find it.
I "View Links" for some other, unconnected topic, and then come back and "View Links" for the to-be-deleted topic (hoping to clear/overwrite some buffer, perhaps). It assiduously repopulates its list with "Linked From:" topics that I know do not link to it.

Flare has been doing this for several releases. I hoped it would be gone with Flare 9.
It's still there.

Flare is obviously referring to links that are stored somewhere other than in the topics themselves, and someplace that is not updated by "Save all". Where is that place, and what is the intended procedure to have it refresh when needed/desired?

Maybe this is a feature, and I just don't understand its featureness?

I wonder if features like concepts or relationship tables are what you're seeing? Those features might need the topic to be removed before they update to not include the topic. Do you use anything like concepts, relationship tables, related topics, etc.?

I had started to use Concepts and Related Topics (no Relationship tables, yet), but NOT for those old topics.... because I knew I was getting rid of them.

Just another in a long line of little Flare mysteries.

Like many of those, it doesn't stop me from working - just slows me down, when I have to check things two and three times.

At a guess, it's probably stored in the analyzer database; so I'd suggest closing the project and deleting the Analyzer folder.

Click the 'Refresh' button on the Link Viewer Toolbar (Round and blue).
That should cause Analyzer to rescan and display the results.
