Can't run Equation Editor after v9.1 upgrade
Can't run Equation Editor after v9.1 upgrade
I upgraded to v9.1 today from v9 on a Windows 7 machine. Now I cannot use the Equation Editor.
1. After installation, I wanted to use the EE. I got a message that Java is required to edit equations and that I can go download it at http://www.java.com/en/download/.
2. I had Java v6 update 31, but because I could not get at EE, I downloaded the latest - V7 update 21 after closing Flare.
3. I opened EE after opening Flare again. I had to kill the program when EE stayed in Loading state for about 12 minutes.
4. I restarted my machine and tried to open EE in Flare again. Still stuck during Loading.
5. Googled for news about this problem. Nothing.
6. I uninstalled Java 7 and went back to the Java 6 from before.
7. Now I get the message that Java is required...
So I turned to this list. Sorry to complain and run, but it is now 7.15 PM where I live and we have a 3-day holiday that started 2 hours ago. I will leave a message warning my colleagues not to install v9.1 on Tuesday morning - unless someone comes up with a solution in the meantime.
Thanks in advance!

Re: Can't run Equation Editor after v9.1 upgrade
The last couple of versions of Java 7 have a security warning popup. It's possible this warning is off your screen. Unfortunately it doesn't respond to the normal windows shortcut key alchemy.
However, to confirm that this is the issue, start the equation editor, wait a short while without clicking anywhere, then press Enter. That will press the Run button on the security warning and the Equation Editor should run normally for this session of Flare.
If this allows the Equation Editor to run correctly, you could permanently hide the warning - shut and reopen Flare and the Equation Editor. When it seems stuck on the Loading screen, press Tab 3 times, press Spacebar (ticks the Do no show this again for apps from the publisher and location above checkbox), then Tab twice more and Enter.

Re: Can't run Equation Editor after v9.1 upgrade
My problem went away over the weekend. I don't know what happened, but I am glad all is well.
I left Flare with the old version of Java. Now, I was going to follow Amber's tip, but I was forced to install Java 7 first. No way around that requirement.
After Java 7 was installed, I opened Equation Editor in a topic and... it opened in seconds.
I am very happy to see that the MathFlow SDK is at 2.0a. It should have a bit more functionality than the previous 1.9 MathFlow SDK that Flare v9 was born with. The nice Bob Mathews from Design Science tipped me off to the goodness in 2.0a, and I submitted an enhancement request to MadCap 2 months ago. I'll take this as proof that MadCap listens.

Re: Can't run Equation Editor after v9.1 upgrade
I seem to be stuck with the exactly the same problems reported above. I am on Flare 9.1.1 and this is probably the first time I've tried to use the equation editor for a while. I was forced to update Java to 7.45. I have since completely restarted to ensure it wasn't anything to do with that update causing me problems. I did get the warning window mentioned, and have been able to check the 'don't warn me again' box, but still the equation editor just sticks "loading" endlessly. My patience has stretched to waiting more than 10 minutes, but still nothing happening. Any ideas?

Update 45 has been known to cause the Equation Editor to stop working. We are looking into a solution.
Using Java7 Update21 should allow you to use the Equation editor without issue.
Here is a link to download and install that version of Java.

Re: Can't run Equation Editor after v9.1 upgrade
I tried the Java 21 update and uninstalled the 45 update that I had first installed. But the only thing I got out of it was a crash in Flare when it tried to load the equation editor. Are you any closer at getting a solution to the problem?

Re: Can't run Equation Editor after v9.1 upgrade
Using the Java7 Update21 works for me. However, this is a security risk because it is a system-wide installation and this Java version has a number of known issues.
Is there a way to have a packaged distribution of this Java version which only the equation editor uses? That way it would be possible to update the system Java installation to the latest and greatest.

Re: Can't run Equation Editor after v9.1 upgrade
My hunch is that our system admin has blocked the use of this update for me. A recent acquisition (=new ownership) has made our security much more stringent (to the extent where it is a bit out of whack). However, that's besides the point, I still need to be able to use e e. without security issues happening.

Are there any updates on this issue? It's been a few months now since v9.1 an even an update since the last post on this thread (9.1.2 on Oct. 25th).

Re: Can't run Equation Editor after v9.1 upgrade
Hi everybody,
I'm using Flare for several months and I'm very pleased with. But the Equation Editor does'nt work too.
All my tests with different Java versions failed.
My "solution" for the moment is to create the equation in LibreOffice, export to MathML and past it
into the TextEditor. It works, but ...
I just want to push this problem here, perhaps is there anybody who can help.
Btw.: Happy new year!
Ralf

Hi Ralf,
Welcome to the forums!
Have you reported this as a bug yet? If not, can I encourage you to do so, as the more people who report it, the more likely it is that MadCap will prioritise the fix. You can report a bug here: https://www.madcapsoftware.com/feedback/bugs.aspx

Hi there,
just for your information:
I reported this bug, the current workaround is still to use Java 7 Update 21 (see above).

Re: Can't run Equation Editor after v9.1 upgrade
I did manage to solve my issue. I was using the 64-bit download of Java v7 u21, which doesn't work with Flare (v9.1). When I followed the link Rob posted above to download the 32-bit/x86 version (and redirected my JAVA_HOME env. variable in Windows 7), equation editor worked fine.

Re: Can't run Equation Editor after v9.1 upgrade
Does anybody know whether there are differences in equation editor between Flare 9.1 and 10, in terms of what Java versions one has to use to run it?
