External Resources and EPub output

I have an HTML5 project that has links to multiple .pdfs. Client now wants epub version. Is it possible to distribute those .pdfs with epub so that hyperlinks work in that output as well? If so, how do I do that? Have tried External Resource mapping and synchronizing, but not having much luck. Thank you.
