In my project, I have created a style called h1.chapter_title.
In Running H/F, I modified the Running H/F 7 variable to: <$paratext[h1.chapter_title]>
This variable was then added to my headers on L/R pages for the Chapter page layout.
My documentation target is PDF.
In the topics and in the generated PDF, instead of seeing my chapter title, I see <$paratext[h1.chapter_title]>.
I've been told this is a bug, but I am not sure, so i submitted a new bug for this. The only workaround (and it's not really a workaround, as you will see) is using one of the header variables, but in doing this, I am not guaranteed that my chapter title will display since any h1 that appears on a topic page will display instead. At least that is my understanding.
Does anyone have a solution to this short of manually adding the chapter title to header frames in page layouts? Any help is appreciated.

Hi,
I've got the same issue. Did you ever get an answer from Madcap ?
Thanks

Note: There is a similar thread http://forums.madcapsoftware.com/viewto ... 687#p98687.
The Running H/F variables are not supported in PDF output, only in Word and Framemaker. That is documented in the Flare Help.

Re: Cannot generate chapter titles using Running H/F
Hi, thinking about a workaround or solution: are there several chapter titles within one topic? This sounds strange for a topic based approach. If there are other h1 headings - are they really at the same level logically? Or could they be moved to h2's for consistency?

You can sort of do running H/F in PDF by using the built-in heading variables in the page layout. I haven't checked them in Flare v10 to see if they added more options, but they used to be a bit limited. For instance, you could use the variable for last h1 tag, but you couldn't specify a specific class of h1 tag. I used that option to at least identify the chapter the current page was in. There is also last h2, etc., so you can sort of do running H/F.

Re: Cannot generate chapter titles using Running H/F
I found a solution to a similar problem.
All my topics have a h1 title (maybe a bad idea), but in the PDF, I group these into sections so there is some structure. And I use the "Use TOC depth for heading levels" feature, with Dave Lee's workaround: http://forums.madcapsoftware.com/viewto ... pth#p93872. So for example, if I had a topic called "Tools", then further topics: "Hammers", "Saws", "Chisels", I wanted headers like this:
Tools
Hammers
Tools
Saws
When you go Insert > Variable, I don't think the comments (descriptions) for the Heading variables ("Level1", "Level2", etc.) are correct; the comments describe these as:
"First h1 on page", "First h2 on page", etc.
which doesn't correspond with my output. If I use Level1, the header doesn't change when there's a new h1.
What did work for me was this header structure:
Level 1
Level 2
It seems that, at least for my setup, these variables do not pick up headings that are h1 or h2 in my topics, but that are at TOC depth 1 and 2.
