Possible to set a chapter label to reflect heading?

Post by FrankyT »

When I add a file to a table of contents, the first heading in the file is used as the label of the TOC item in the TOC editor. It also seems to be used as the System.Title value in my company's appendix master pages, so it appears in the footer.

If I edit the title, the change isn't reflected in the TOC. I'm stuck with the original heading, or else I have to edit the label manually. Therefore, in my appendix pages (see above), the footer appendix chapter title fails to update if I change the title of the appendix.

This is very irritating as it is unknown (in my documents at least) for no chapter heading ever to change. Is there a way to get them to update automatically that I'm missing? Or do I always have to make the edit to the heading in two places?

(Incidentally, I can't find any mention in the Flare Help file of the System.Title MadCap variable so I have no idea how it works.)

Thanks.

Update...

I've solved the problem of the footers not updating: I needed to edit the Properties of each individual content HTM file (not TOC entries) and in Topic Properties delete the Topic Title so that it got replaced with "(Always use the first topic heading)".

Still can't work out how to update the labels of items in TOCs but the bigger irritant has been resolved.

Submit a feature request at https://www.madcapsoftware.com/feedback ... quest.aspx. Others have expressed a similar desire, although I wouldn't want that feature, so if they implement it, hopefully they do so as an option that can be toggled on and off in the TOC file.
