I have a PDF target where the format of the page numbers at the bottom of the page needs to be 000(one digit chapter#)-(page #) for chapters 1 through 9, and 00(two digit chapter #)-(page #) for chapters 10-99 (don't have above 99 chapters, and probably won't). The page # can be any number of digits and resets to 1 every chapter.
I currently have the pages set up to display this format at the bottom of each page correctly....I'm sure I didn't do it in the most elegant way, but I have a chapter 1-9 page layout that has the 000 as a permanent part of the footer, and right after follows the [ChapterNumber variable]-[PageNumber variable]. I also have a chapter 10 through 99 page layout that has only two zeroes in the footer to account for the two digit chapter number, 00[ChapterNumber variable]-[PageNumber]. The order of the chapters doesn't vary much at the moment, so I just manually set the page layouts as needed in the target TOC because I know where the break between chapter 9 and 10 will be. In the target TOC, I have the chapter number increment for each chapter and the page number reset to 1 each chapter.
With this setup, my print PDF TOC displays only the page # (e.g. ...................9), but what I want it to display is .....................000(chapter number)-(page number) for the first nine chapters (e.g. 0004-7, for chapter 4, page 7) and 00(two digit chapter number)-(page number) for chapters 10-99.
My questions are:
1. With my current setup, is there a way to set up the PDF TOC to display 000(chapter number)-(page#) and 00(two-digit chapter number)-(page#) to match the footers on the actual content pages as I want?
2. Should I change to another content chapter/page numbering setup that would make it easier to get the PDF TOC to auto-number the way I want it to?
Also, regardless of whether it will solve my PDF TOC issue, if you just want to suggest a better way to set up the content chapter/page number footer auto-numbering so that the right number of zeroes will appear without me having to set it manually in the target TOC, I would be happy to hear it.
PDF TOC Page# format as 000(chapter#)-(page#)?

Did you ever find a solution to the numbering problem in the TOC? I have a client who wants to put the chapter number in the PDF's printed TOC as well, as the page numbering re-starts with each chapter. I went into the auto numbering for the TOC style, but that doesn't let me control the part of the output that has the page number.

Nope, haven't found a solution yet, although I haven't really been messing with the TOC since I posted.

Sorry in advance that I've got very little time so I'm just gonna blast away.
To have a chapter number be part of the page number, one has to set up the format on the TOC Properties window. For example, for the first TOC item that will start Chapter 1, open its properties and go to the Printed Output tab. Be sure that you've set the Chapter break. Then, under the page number, from the Format drop-down list, select text. Then, in the Reset to field, type in {chapnum}-{n}. The {chapnum} variable will yield the chapter number and the {n} variable will yield the page number.
For subsequent chapters, do exactly the same thing, rather than selecting "Increment number". I know this works, as I set up a training guide this way, and all the chapter numbers and page numbers come out great. And they are picked up in the printed table of contents.
HTH. If not, post back and when I get more time (on my lunch break later today) I'll see if there's anything else I can do.
Also, apologies if I'm not answering the original poster's question.

Hi. I'm doing this same thing with regard to the TOC and {chapnum} - {pagenum}. However, when I do this last solution with {chapnum} - {n} in the Printed Output section's "Reset to" field in the Table of Contents, all of my actual page numbers throughout the chapters become Chapnum - Chapnum - Pagenum. What's causing this? I want the pages to just be Chapnum - Pagenum.
