A new set of newbie questions

Post by sdcinvan »

MadCap support was extremely helpful this morning in solving yesterday's problems. But 3 hours later, I have gathered a whole new set of issues.

Hopefully, the community can help with some of these before I call support. :-)

Footers (and headers)
I have customized a footer but I noticed that there are several types, labelled as: L, R, F, E

1. What is the best way to:
a) duplicate footers (or headers)
b) assign a specific custom footer (or header) to a page

Image Captions
2. How do I create image captions? Other then manually adding text underneath. Is there a way to automate a caption whenever a new image is inserted?

I did attempt to create a custom style of caption_custom but could not set the default css values to 9pt, italics - after entering these values, the fields would go back to "unset". Not sure why?

Custom bullets
3. How do I create custom bullet styles?
i.e. (1), (2), or square (check box) bullets

These sort of styles are built into Word. Is there a way to unlock similar styles in Flare v9? Some good information on how to incorporate custom image bullets can be found here: http://forums.madcapsoftware.com/viewto ... f=6&t=7023 but images are not appropriate for my current bullet requirements.

Table and Cells
4. How to I add a line/border (color) to only the top of specific selected cells in a table.

5. How do I make selected cell heights the same in a table? I know how to make cell widths the same but I see no option to uniformly make all selected cell heights the same.

Create watermark
Despite looking at this forum contribution: http://forums.madcapsoftware.com/viewto ... 10&t=12653
I am still having troubles with placing a working watermark. When I insert an image watermark into Chapters.flpgl, it appears as 99% covered by the page text or graphics. A proper watermark should be a transparent image or text (in my case - image) that overlays on top of content in a non-intrusive manner.
6. How do I create a transparent watermark that overlays over the content?

TOC

When I publish (PDF), there is a blank page, before and after the automatic TOC page.
7. How do I correct this?

8. The page numbers are roman numerals. Why and how do I change this?

Page breaks
9. For each .htm (discrete 'chunk'), I expect automatic page breaks. However, when I publish to PDF, all the pages are printed without any page breaks.

Thank you for your generous assistance.

I'm going on memory, so bear with me. You change that in the TOC. For the book at which the pages will reset to page 1, open that TOC item for editing. I'm not sure which tab it'll be one, but look for the Page Number controls. Set it to restart, specify to restart at 1, and specify that you want Arabic (1, 2, 3). That should do it.

I assume that your topics begin with a heading tagged with h1, h2, or so forth. If you ALWAYS want an h1 heading to begin on a new page, then you can edit the h1 style in your stylesheet (and, if you'll use the same stylesheet for online and print output, then make these edits in the medium you use for print output). Add a "page-break-before: always" attribute. (I know I'm going fast, so you'll have to look for this yourself in the Stylesheet Editor; sorry...). If you want only SOME h1s to have a page break before, then create a class of h1, such as h1.PageBrkBefore, and put the attribute there. Then apply that style to the headings where you want pages to break.

Search for forums (sorry; I'm short of time) for discussions on using generic classes for controlling pagination. LTinker68 has posted some excellent suggestions about them.

Thank you, thank you. One technical problem off my list. Five gold stars for you. :D

Well, I was able to go into the Project Organizer and edit the TOCs Master in notepad, changing all the incidences of "lower roman" to "Arabic". That worked but I don't think that was the ideal way to make this change.

Thank you. Chipping off the issues. :-)

This can be done in the GUI as Nita mentioned.
- Open your TOC and select the first entry where there is a problem or you want to reset numbering.
- Open/edit the properties for that entry.
- Select the Printed Output tab
- Page Number formatting is in the middle - it is only endabled if the Break Type at the top is "Chapter Break. Select the style you want from the Format selection list.
