Importing HTML file, can it be mapped?

Post by eklisiewicz »

Hello, I have a large HTML file that was created as a LaTeX output. It has all the topics lumped together into one .htm file. I want to break it out into separate topics. Is there any way to do this through the import process, or must it be done manually? I thought there was as I thought I did it this way once before and remember mapping the imported styles to styles from my style sheet. But for the life of me, I cannot get this to work this way on subsequent tries. It merely copies the single file into my project.

Any help is appreciated.

I've never needed to import HTML files, but I was curious to check out the process. You're right that the Import > HTML feature doesn't offer a way to break up a single HTML file into multiple Flare topics, much less even to map its styles to styles that are present in the project.

But here's a thought. Open the HTML file in Word. I just tried this in Word 2010, and Word recognized the paragraphs set as headings. Then I saved the file as a Word document, and from there I could import that into Flare and break the large doc up into many topics based on the headings.

Post back if this idea has merit.

Hi Nita, What version of Word are you using? Because when I open my HTML file in word, it tells me:

The file contains custom XML elements which are no longer supported by Word. If you save this file, these custom XML elements will be removed permanently.

Since I don't have LaTeX, I have no idea what these custom elements are, but it makes me wonder if Word 2010 is a viable option for these conversions.

As I mentioned in my original post, Word 2010.

Maybe there's some other similar option, such as OpenOffice.

Have you seen that XML error before?

As I said, I've never needed to import the way you are, so I experimented just enough to offer a possible solution. When I did my little experiment using Word 2010, I did not get any XML errors. But I was importing something pretty short and simple, not something that sounds as complex as yours. Sorry... :(

I tried with Open Office and Word. word gives me errors, and Open Office gives me a bunch of code instead of a readable document. Thanks for the suggestions.
