I'm trying to set up a toggler to show/hide a step in a numbered list, but the numbering doesn't function the way I would expect it to when a step is hidden. Example below.
I set up a numbered list and assign step 2 as a named element. Then I create a toggler to show/hide step 2. When the toggler is expanded to show step 2, the numbered list (1-4) displays exactly as I would expect it to.
But when I collapse the toggler to hide step 2, I am left with steps 1, 3, and 4.
Is there a way to set up the toggler so that when the named element is a numbered list item, the numbering is correct? Perhaps this should be a feature request, but I wanted to check here in case I'm missing something.

I don't think so (and, anyone, if I'm wrong, please speak up!).spordelia wrote:Is there a way to set up the toggler so that when the named element is a numbered list item, the numbering is correct? Perhaps this should be a feature request, but I wanted to check here in case I'm missing something.
If you look at the code of the topics in the output (not the source), you'll see that the list items each have a "value" attribute, such as:
Code: Select all
<li value="2"> I'm curious as to the rationale of wanting the numbers to reset if the toggle is opened or closed. Say someone is reading with the toggler open and they finish reading Step 2. Then they close the toggler and wish to continue to the next step. But if you could do what you're trying to achieve, the next step will now be renumbered to Step 2, and the user might skip it altogether, thinking they'd already read it, and go to the step that IS labeled Step 3.

I agree; I don't get the point of changing the step number depending on if the step is shown or hidden.
If you're trying to hide that step from certain users, then togglers wouldn't be the way to go about doing that. You'd have to use condition tags with multiple targets to differentiate content viewable to different user groups. For instance, you could have a target and condition that generates help content for "basic" users and another target and condition that's used to generate help content for "advanced" or "support" users.

Re: Toggle a numbered list item
If the second step is an extra bit of info, would it be appropriate to put it as a sub-para of Step 1?
1. First step
For further details, click here (toggler or drop-down)
Continuation para, which contains the stuff in your current step 2, which is hidden until the user clicks to see it.
2. Next step
3. Last step

Re: Toggle a numbered list item
Thanks for the replies and the tip. It is technically its own step, but making it a substep is a good workaround.
The toggler is at the beginning of the topic, and the steps appear later--by the time the user gets to the step, it is either shown or hidden. They wouldn't toggle back and forth in the middle of the process. So I wish it worked the way I would expect--I can't really think of a situation where you would want to hide a step and you wouldn't want the numbering to accurately reflect what steps are shown.
Thanks again!
