Flare v9 won't start
Hello everybody, I need help starting the MadCap Flare 9. When I start it it crashes after showing the main window. I reinstalled .NET 4.5 already, not working still. Rebooted several times, still the same.
It is an event 1026. Below is what the Event Viewer says (in Czech though, hope you won't mind...). Thanks a lot!

________________^^^^^^ - that may be the problem. That isn't .Net 4.5.Umiaki wrote:Hello everybody, I need help starting the MadCap Flare 9. When I start it it crashes after showing the main window. I reinstalled .NET 4.5 already, not working still. Rebooted several times, still the same.

Hello, welcome to the Flare forum.
I would suggest removing all traces of Microsoft .net (all versions). Then reboot, re-install only the latest version of .net from here: http://go.microsoft.com/?linkid=9831986 [latest is .net v4.5.1] After it is installed, do a Windows update, reboot again... and re-try Flare. To take this a bit more extreme, I would also consider removing Flare at the same time as .net and re-installing Flare after .net is upgraded.
What version of Windows are you using and how much memory is installed?
Best regards,
Shawn

Re: Flare v9 won't start
Thanks, I've just uninstalled .NET. My OS is Vista with 3 GB of RAM. I'm installing SP1 right now, which I didn't have.
Re: Flare v9 won't start
So, I did unistall all .NETs, installed a new 4.5, which is now installed, but the error is shown in the same way.
Can it be because of the missing Vista SP1? I still do not have it because Vista has munched up all the free space on my system disk, I cannot increase it and SP installation needs 7 gigs of memory.

Hmm, I have a couple of concerns.Umiaki wrote:So, I did unistall all .NETs, installed a new 4.5, which is now installed, but the error is shown in the same way.

1) You are using Vista.
2) You are using Vista without the latest service pack.
3) You do not have enough disk space.
4) You have the bare minimum of RAM
Is this a Flare trial? If so, you have 30 days of free support. Nevertheless, I would recommend finding a way to correct concerns 2 and 3 first.
I'm not even certain that Flare will work with Microsoft Vista (it was Microsoft's terrible problem child).

Re: Flare v9 won't start
Flare should work on Vista, but not having all updates applied is simply not a good idea. There are also plenty of updates to updates for updates for .NET.

Re: Flare v9 won't start
Flare is installed on a different disk and the system disk still has over 5 GB free, so it shouldn't be a concern.sdcinvan wrote:Hmm, I have a couple of concerns.

3 GB RAM is a bare minimum? To be honest, I haven't checked the reqs... it is a trial version, you are right.
I need to work out the space for SP1 installation (there's this bloody winsxs directory...).
update: actually, 4 GB is minimum RAM, wow, didn't expect it...

Re: Flare v9 won't start
You might be okay with 3 GB, it just means that Flare won't operate at optimal speed... actually, your entire Windows will constantly do a lot of disk swapping and just be pretty darn slow. If you can re-install (do not update) with Windows 7 (stay away from v8), you will experience huge improvements with the exact same hardware.Umiaki wrote:Flare is installed on a different disk and the system disk still has over 5 GB free, so it shouldn't be a concern.sdcinvan wrote:Hmm, I have a couple of concerns.

If you are on the trial, you should call MadCap support. MadCap's telephone CS is exceptional!

Re: Flare v9 won't start
According to the tech support it is a problem of .NET. So I tries to uninstall everything (Flare, all .NETs). And then I installed everything back. Fully updated everything and even installed the dev pack of .NET. Still getting the same error... I am quite desperate now really...

Re: Flare v9 won't start
Do you have any other computer available? Even an old XP box or a non-production server might work for now just to get you going. The only other idea I have is to try a virtual machine. I'd keep pestering support to help you out. After all, getting Flare to start up is the least one should expect. They may need to remotely access your system, but that is something you need to discuss with support.

Re: Flare v9 won't start
Test which version of .Net you are running by issuing the following DOS command:
NOTE: It may take up to five minutes before you see a response.
Just for reference, my working [perfectly] Windows 7, 64bit computer (with 8GB RAM and over 1TB of free disk space) issued the following values:
Version
4.0.30319
4.0.30319
3.60.0
I didn't realize that the older version of .Net was fine, nor did I realize that I still had some older legacy versions of .Net. But since it all works, I'm not going to touch it.
