I have been trying to import a file from Word into Flare and I have noticed that I am missing different text areas from the doc.
Specs:
Word 2010
Flare V9.1.2
Steps:
New Project -> Import Word Doc -> Set out put to PDF (have also tried HTML5 & Word and get the exact same results)->Add File -> everything else after is default. I have changed in the "New Topic Style" different Word Styles.
Issue:
All text that comes from Word with Style "Header 5" does not import. Header 1-4 and 6 come through but no 5.
The first line of all tables in the document are blank. The style is the same as the rest of the table cells, but the information doesnot show for the first line.
There is a one word piece of information before all tables in the doc that doesn't show up. It is not part of the table and the style is basic, nothing fancy, just Bold is all.
So any ideas as to why I have missing text?
I even removed all formatting from the doc and changed everything to plain text, same style and the same words still came up missing on import.
I am new to this program as all tech writing I have done in the past has been just in Word.
Thank you for any help.
Keith
Missing text on import
Update to "Missing text on import"
So playing around and thinking....
What "if" Flare is "censoring" my document....
Maybe the words that are deleted are "bad" words and my doc is too "contriversal" to even import....
Maybe.....
Well anyways... the words being deleted are;
Method
Description
Properties
Property
Type
None
Name
(read-only)
So far these are the only words I found missing.... The funny part is, if these words are in sentences with other words, then they are ok... left alone and they get censored!
Any clues?
Thanks
Keith

Re: Missing text on import
Try checking back in the Word document to see if there are any fields around these words/phrases. Some fields like indexes are set to hidden - that might be causing problems.

Re: Missing text on import
If the word document is comparatively small, or not too overwrought with styles, you could select all in Word and remove the formatting before importing. Once in Flar you can create a style sheet and apply styles as necessary.
This has the advantage of starting from a clean slate, without having to reauthor the content. The 'new' document will be free of legacy Word styles and foibles.
The disadvantages include it is a one way street, reimporting will not be a viable option, and it is a little bit time consuming. But if it is a viabble option it will have benefits in the long run.

Re: Missing text on import
No idea why Heading5 is sulking, but another workround could be to change all Heading5s to a different number heading? Or apply a different style to it in Word (not a local style, create a proper Word style) and when importing, make that style change to H5.
And I don't think Flare has anything against the words you listed!

Re: Missing text on import
ChoccieMuffin - Did the whole style (not local) changing and even named it ones that are Flare names. - Same results.
wclass - no fields. Same issue happens when I make everything a standard style, copy/past everything into a brand new, blank, no added stuff Word doc. Paste is done as text only, no formatting
SteveS - Did that, still don't work.
Now for another twist in the plot...
I do a find/replace in Word and replace the words with the exact same word. Don't touch the format or styles at all, just a find/replace. Save and re-import. My words come in now on the style they should be. I like "wclass" idea of hidden fields if there were any, but there are none. Especially when I copy & plain paste as text into another totally different, doc that uses the standard, unaltered normal.dot template of Word.
I am at a lose, but like I said, find/replace and re-import seems to work. A lot of work though....
Thanks all! Let me know if there are any other ideas that come to mind.

Re: Missing text on import
OK, here's another thought...
Copy your (unformatted) text and paste it into notepad/ notepad++/ <your favourite text editor>. Save it as a text file and either try to import the text file or copy it again and paste it into Word. I'm hoping a plain text editor will ignore (and delete) whatever is contaminating the import.
It strikes me as the words not importing have significance in some program languages (ie key words). Has the text been cut or copied from a programming environment?
