Footer not showing up in PDF output

Post by Jim »

Hello all!

I'm having a problem with my PDF output that I hope someone can help me with.

I have a page layout designed for the Chapters in my PDF that contains a footer (basically, page X of Y). For each Chapter page in the Content Explorer:
  • the "Layout" is set to Print
the "Medium" is set to print
the "Page Layout" is set to Chapters.flpgl (which has the footer)
All of the pages when I'm editing in Flare look correct (and even show the footer!) When I actually build the PDF output, the footer isn't showing up. I've checked the MadCap | pageFooter style -- all looks good there.

Any other reason you can think of that might be causing this?

Thanks for your help!

Is there any possibility that you have more than one frame in your page layout that is designated Footer? Flare apparently allows you to do this, and to link them together, so text should flow from one to the other. That's the theory, I think. In practice, this doesn't work, and you will find that only one of the designated footers will display, and even that may not include everything you expect.

I'd take a good look at your page layout and make sure there is at most one header and footer frame, and ideally, only one decoration frame too. If you want to do fancy layouts and positioning within a frame, I've found that it's best to add a table and use that to position elements, rather than adding multiple frames.

Also, make sure the footer frame itself is tall/wide enough to contain your content. It won't adjust the size of the frame if the content is too big. You have to account for the content's font size, line height, padding, margin, etc., so more than likely your footer frame is too short.

Thanks for the replies.

My page layout is very simply -- all it has is a body block and a footer. The footer has only the page number in it.

Today, I got in and tried removing the page layout completely and adding one of the templates that comes with Flare -- even then, the footer doesn't show up.

What's even more weird is that this document was created from a template. Another Flare project created from the same template works fine.

Off to do more experimenting -- I'll let you know if I come up with anything!

Thanks again.

Ok -- I missed setting the chapter breaks in the TOC. Once that was done, all is good!
