Flare 10 Find and Replace in Files

Hi all

Have I misunderstood the functionality here or is there a bug?

In V9, when I wanted to find some text in the whole project I could type it in the Find What box (or whatever it's called).
In V10, I can't type in the Find box, the only thing I can do is select text that I've previously searched for, using a drop-down box. To get round this, I have to type the text I want to find elsewhere, and then copy and paste it into the box.

Is this a bug, or is it deliberately designed to "work" like this?

(Please tell me they didn't do this on purpose!)

I don't have that problem at all in Flare 10. I can easily type in the Find box as well as in the Replace box. Don't know what to say...

I can also type directly into the new Find or the Replace widgets.
There was another issue where people had problems with the keyboard, and a patch has been released. Could your problem be related to that?

I ran the update, the version I'm running is 10.0.1 - 05/03/2014:15:56.

I feel a note to Tech Support coming on.

How very odd - it's working again now! Might have something to do with restarting my machine a couple of times (for other non-Flare reasons). I'll keep an eye on it and will report it if it happens again. Thanks for the confirmation, folks.

I'm still seeing the same issue in 10.2.1 Almost as if a buffer has filled up with past recent search entries and can accept no more chars.

Toggling in an out of quick find seems to fix it.

Same problem here. Sometimes it won't accept typing after several successful uses, other times it happens at the very first try after opening the project.

Support "couldn't replicate" (Case 64034, 8/5/2014), so we're left with composing text in Notepad and pasting it into the boxes (yes boxes; it also happens in the Replace box) whenever the boxes freeze. There is no consistency to this issue, so cache issues don't seem to come into play.

I still get this problem now and again, it's been in since the first version of v10.
Report it as a bug - the more people that do, the more likely it is to get fixed.

I have had a reply from Tech Support this morning. I'll give it a try and let you know if that does the trick, but in the meantime here's what they said:

Please try performing a repair of all the instances of Microsoft .NET Framework on your machine by following the steps below:

1. Open Windows Control Panel
2. Programs and Features
3. Search for Microsoft .NET Framework Client Profile.
3. Right-click the item > Uninstall/Change > repair

The machine will need to be restarted to complete the repair.

Same here, as it happens. Have just emailed them to let them know. Let's see what happens... (I predict - not a lot!)

Has anyone else actually reported this as a bug, or am I the only one? I'm in communication with Tech Support and they say they haven't heard of this before, which I find rather surprising as it's been around for a while.

And what were you doing when it happened, what did you do to fix it?

Yep, around 6 months ago - 56986; but I can't remember if it was supposed to have been fixed.

Apparently that's a bug about wrapping text around a graphic, Dave.

:-)

That's the case number in the email they sent to me.

BTW, where are you checking the number - is there somewhere reliable to check these?

That was the message I got in an email from Tech Support, who I'm talking to by email at the mo.

Very old thread, but in case anyone is interested, I just downloaded the latest Flare, 10.2.2 and have the same problem with not being able to type in either the Find or Replace box.

I've run into this before and can't remember (sorry) if I rebooted Flare or the entire machine to fix it. But try closing Flare and starting it up again. If that doesn't work, restart your PC.

It happens when I've done lots of S&R one after the other.

I think the system just takes a lot of time to "catch up", because even if I don't do anything in particular to clear it, it sometimes resolves itself half an hour or so later. Annoying though...

I've been on version 10 since it came out (now on 10.2.2) and have just encountered this one for the first time!
No wonder they can't replicate...
I'll raise a bug report anyway.

The bug is still around. Generally, I need to close and restart Flare. Repairing .NET does not work for me. We received fresh builds less than a month ago and it happened days after that. Next time it happens, I will open a bug report.

It was supposedly fixed according to the Release Notes:

36498 Find and replace window is unnecessarily disabled in some instances.

I have encountered this problem a few times.

I found that exiting Flare and re-starting fixed this glitch. I am not entirely certain but I believe I first encountered this issue between Flare v10.0.1 and v10.1. I am absolutely certain that I have not encountered this problem in Flare v10.2.2.

Bumped into it again just a couple of days ago, using the latest Flare (10.2). Pretty convinced it's a memory thing, or Flare just being really slow to catch up with all the messing around I was doing at the time (which was lots and lots of search and replace).

I recommend Search & Replace Master for large scale searches. I've found that it handles spaces better and you can use wildcards (although, that can be dangerous if you're not careful). I only use Flare's for a single topic or two.

Kwag, if I need to do mass Search and Replace operations I prefer to use FAR, but that is not appropriate in this instance as I want to look at the different instances of certain bits of text and see whether I need to change them or not. That is ONLY sensible inside Flare so I can see what else is going on around the bits I've been searching for. I was replacing each thing individually, not Replace All.

But I have been doing quite a few of that kind of thing, and had our piece of software that I'm documenting running as well, so that's why I am pretty convinced it's a memory thing, as it does seem to "catch up" eventually. It's a bit of a nuisance but nothing I can't live with in the grand scheme of things, as there are a other much more annoying things to be bothered about.
