Webhelp not displaying in IE11

Post by MM_Writer »

I'm having trouble with my webhelp not displaying in IE11. I am using FlareV8.1.2. I have two versions of the help I'm talking about - a previous release and a current release.

Our clients cannot view our previous release with IE11 (they see the skin, but no TOC or content), but CAN view our current release. I've tried regenerating the previous release, but have the same issue. Is there some setting that I may have switched between then and now that would make my webhelp work in IE11? I want to go back to the previous release and fix it so that it can also be seen in IE11.

Thanks.

As far as I'm aware, WebHelp generated with Flare 8 won't display in IE 11 (nor the latest version of Google Chrome, if I remember correctly), although it works with IE 10, and the current version of Mozilla. It's fine in all browsers if generated in Flare 9. Not sure if this helps, or not.

I'm not sure how your client can view the current version in IE 11 if it was built with Flare 8. Could the current version have been built with Flare 9?

Nope. I'm the only writer and own the only copy of Flare, which is V8.1.2.

I'd be interested if you get to the bottom of this then. Are you able to compare the files in the version that works and the version that doesn't, and see if you can spot any differences in the output that aren't due to the different content? Beyond Compare (from Scooter Software) is an excellent folder/file comparison tool.

My understanding is that MS decided to write thier own javascript reader rather than pay the licence fee to Mozilla. Except that the MS version doesn't read javascript very well. :-o

So, the only work around is either to write pages specifically for IE11 or force IE11 into compatability mode. Insert the following metatag into your topic's <head> section:

<meta http-equiv="X-UA-Compatible" content="IE=10" />

This bit of code checks if the browser is IE, and if >IE10 then to run as IE10 (e.g. ignore IE11 features).

Alternatively, use FF, Chrome, Opera, Safari, etc... they all run HTML5 built in Flare 8.

Also alternatively upgrade to the latest Flare version which should support IE11 better....give it a trial run using a backup of your project. That way you can make sure it works before thinking about how to pay for it if you do not have the maintenance contract.

I'm having this exact same problem -- working with my first Flare project in V8. Can anyone actually confirm from experience that current Flare 10 generates HTML5 that IE can read?

Comments from MadCap staff welcome -- if this is still the case, Flare is a complete non-starter... no way can I deploy a help system and then tell people it doesn't work in IE. Even worse is if I get my company to pay $$$ for an upgrade to V10 and it still doesn't work.

WebHelp from Flare 10 or HTML5 from Flare 10?

If I were working in Flare 10, I'd upgrade to the HTML5 output which is far superior to the WebHelp target.

But, if you're stuck with the dumpy old Webhelp format, you can test this URL where I published some content today from Flare V10 so you can test it in various browsers:

Sample Project published from Flare V10 in dumpy WebHelp format :D

I meant to add that I am using IE 11.0.9 on Win 8 64-bit, and I can see the WebHelp output just fine. For some reason, it loads much smaller than it should, but you can use CTRL + + to zoom in, or CTRL + - to zoom out. Use CTRL + 0 to go back to the default size.

Ah. Then you can look at MadCap's KB which is published from Flare V10 and is located at: http://kb.madcapsoftware.com. Use that for browser checking for HTML5 output. I have yet to see a current-version browser that has trouble with it.

I have IE 11 and both Flare 9 and Flare 10 generate WebHelp and html5 that can be viewed fine in IE 11. Flare 8 didn't.
